Setting Kathleen Parker Straight By W. David Jenkins III
With the international release of "Fahrenheit 9/11" in the wake of a flood of anti-Bush publications, there has been much ranting from the right as to the need for Americans to stick together and that further polarizing the masses is counterproductive. I would think that the record-breaking popularity of these new sources of enlightenment must surely have conservatives doing a bit of pacing late at night. And with little, if any, facts to defend their tantrums against this turning tide of public opinion, they have no other tactic to use except to accuse the accusers of making things worse. I have one word for these people. Tough. I’d like to know where their calls for unity were for eight tortured years not long ago (or, parenthetically, why those calls have been made only since George W. Bush took office, for that matter.) While visions of dress stains danced in their heads, these Starr-struck obsessions obstructed valuable resources in the so-called fight against terror and brought this country to the dark and ugly place we now find ourselves in. And I’ve also noticed the right-wing angle lately in using yesterday’s dress stains to somehow defend today’s bloodstains. Now that recent, and not-so-recent, events are starting to shed an unflattering light on the failings of their ideology, the neo-conservatives have taken to acting like little Rodney Kings with their pitiful calls for everyone to "just get along." Well, it ain’t gonna work. One of those reasons is the conservative darling, columnist Kathleen Parker, who seems bent on pushing the assertion that those on the left are unpatriotic in their dislike for Bush and are hoping for the worst to happen in Iraq. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with her, Parker is the right-wing faux Soccer Mom who wrote on October 22, 2001, that in light of the dangers posed by the Taliban – and those like them – "even the Democrats are grateful that Bush stole the election." How’s that for "unifying" the country?
Parker has spent the last three years or so drooling over how "sexy" Donald Rumsfeld is while deriding Bush detractors as "conspiracy theorists" and then ignoring the reality that the 9/11 commission has shown some of those theories to have been based on facts. More recently, Parker has demonstrated her desire to unite the country behind the criminals in the White House with her piece, "Iraq handover and the arrogance of despair." Parker wastes no time in showing why conservatives have no desire to unite anything, except their shrinking base. Very early in her article, she lists two very distinct groups to justify her reasons as to why the "sovereignty" secretly passed on to the hand-picked, temporary Iraqi government is both good news and bad news. Those to whom this event was "good news" (she writes) are the United States of America, the Muslim world, Bush, the Republican Party and the Iraqi people. Got all that? Now here’s the list of those who, she states, consider the event as "bad news." Ready? The radical Islamist world [sic], terrorists, al-Qaeda, Michael Moore, George Soros, John F. Kerry, moveon.org and the Democratic Party. Oh my, my, my, Kathleen. Aren’t you the clever one! While the conservative defensive line is out there ranting on and on about how divisive all this talk of Bush failures is, their Little Miss Parker (and others like her) is lumping the opposition with terrorists again. It’s not exactly an original tactic but it is a favorite and it’s also the reason why conservatives are losing the moral high ground (as if they ever had it to begin with) and widespread support of the country. So allow me to set a few things straight with you, Miss Polyester-pit-bull Parker. First of all, Sweetie-Bumps, nobody wants Iraq to be a disaster. Yes, many of us thought the invasion was a mistake and that it was being justified by lies (or "mistruths," if you like) and we and much of the rest of the world have since been proven right. Now that your heroes have shown themselves to be complete failures in waging invasions and handling the consequences, we want whatever will finally work for the best in Iraq and bring our misused brave soldiers home quickly. Second, this sovereignty you and your ilk are harping upon is little more than another in a long line of photo ops masquerading as "victories." The Iraqi provisional government is really just babysitting the country. Bremer was even kind enough to leave a list of "dos" and "don’ts" before he hightailed it to the airport – within two hours of the hasty ceremony. The only changes that took place in Iraq this last week were on paper! This includes Iraq’s legal "possession" of Saddam Hussein. This "sovereignty" you like to harp upon is little more than a vehicle allowing the Bushies to have yet another scapegoat when things don’t work out the way they thought, and we all know how much these guys need scapegoats! The facts are we’re still there, we’re still being shot at, foreign terrorists are still popping up where there weren’t any before, the infrastructure is still a mess and Halliburton is still ripping off taxpayers in the name of freedom and democracy. Having handpicked, ex-CIA personnel in a position of blame to give the image of sovereignty is hardly a reason to celebrate. Pointing this kind of reality out, Miss Parker, is not siding with terrorists – it’s called opening your eyes. Lastly, dear, the folks you mentioned in the same list – you know, the one with al-Qaeda and the terrorists on it – are Americans too. I know this may come as quite a shock but it happens to be true. People like Michael Moore and George Soros are giving a voice to those who have been ignored for the last three years and now that we finally have some momentum, we’re going to roll all over you Bush kissers with the facts instead of the hyperventilating nonsense that seems to appease your fans. There are patriots out here who will not be governed by fear. While you people wallow in one call to arms after another as you deplete the store shelves of duct tape and plastic wrap, we will continue to speak up and hold our court-appointed leaders to account for the disasters they have wrought upon a once-respected nation. We recognize that Bush and his ideologues pissed away any opportunity they had after 9/11 to unite the world in this so-called "war on terror." Now the world is holding us to account for the mistakes we’ve made and we recognize that repair to our standing in this global community cannot begin until we rid ourselves of the inept and pompous leaders who brought us to this low point in our history. Those of us who dissent against this disastrous administration are practicing a right granted us as Americans – the same right you people exercised a short time ago because of a President who lied about sex. And you’re all still hung up on it while hundreds of flag-draped coffins swell the bellies of military planes and are being snuck into the country at night because of the lies of George W. Bush and the lies of those who support him. Where is your outrage now? I don’t know if there is a way to ever unite this country or if we were ever truly united to begin with. But I do know one thing. Your eagerness, Miss Parker, to equate those who oppose Bush in his chronic failures with terrorists is possibly the most unpatriotic thing you could do. We on the left recognize that we are all Americans, not just those who agree with you and your ilk. And the sooner all of you realize that, the sooner Americans can begin to work as they originally were meant to work – as a union.
