Dear MoveOn member,
It's been quite a week in our campaign to cancel the May 15th Medicare "senior tax" and fix the drug program. On Wednesday, we presented over a 150,000 signatures and comments to Congress and the national media at a major rally in Washington DC. And Yesterday, thousands of us gathered outside over 100 Republican Congressional offices in 38 states. Thanks to your great work, we were heard.
Yesterday's events were a big success. We delivered giant checks representing the amount each representative has taken from the major drug companies in exchange for this corrupt program. And we spoke out, often to television, radio, and newspaper reporters, demanding that Congress cancel the lifetime penalties and fix the drug plan. (You can see some more great photos here).
With just a couple days left before the deadline, there's still time to act. Can you take a minute to write a letter to the editor of your local paper? If you submit it this afternoon, there's a good chance it could make the Sunday edition—the most read paper of the week. You can see some talking points, write and submit your letter online here:
http://political.moveon.org/lte?lte_campai...YdwDLI9bIOg&t=6Members across the country reported having a great time and making a real impact. Here's what some members had to say:
The best moment was Rep. Shaw seeing us hold the check up as he went to lunch.
– Jewellene W. Fort Lauderdale, Florida
After our moving senior speaker, the local news team, WCBD channel 2 (NBC), who was filming the event for tonight's news, told us that they want to do a follow-up story with one of our local seniors at their residence so they can see first hand the cost of the new Medicare program.
– Tara G. North Charleston, South Carolina
My best moment was showing my daughter that her representatives are available to listen to constituents.
– Carrie S. Grand Rapids, Michigan
Reports are still coming in, but it's already clear that your events helped to generate some important news stories in many key areas. Here's a sample of the excellent coverage you helped to create:
More than 20 people yesterday protested changes to Medicare prescription drug coverage at the district office of Rep. Darrell Issa. Organizers said the protest was part of a nationwide effort organized by MoveOn.org.
– San Diego Union Tribune1
An 81-year-old Germantown women's rights advocate will be among the MoveOn.org members targeting U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., today in an effort to have the Medicare Prescription Drug benefit deadline extended.
– Memphis Commercial Appeal2
Pressure is building on Congress to take action, but it's still not clear what will happen on Monday. This weekend, Congress will be scouring the press to gauge concern amongst the general public. If you can write a letter to the editor for this weekend's paper, calling on Congress to support canceling the lifetime late fees and fixing the drug program, you could help tip the balance.
It only takes a few minutes. You can write, and submit your letter online, by going here:
