I have been hanging at ABC Primetime forum the last two days. A real "happening" is going on... not political , but very spontaneous and its getting bigger . Last Friday ABC Primetime aired a story about step-families. It was about two families filmed for three years. One family particularly stood out... Read and see what a Pandora's Box ABC has opened:

I saw that show Yank, and I gotta say, ABC was derelict in their reporting of abuse of a minor. Not just mental abuse, but also physical. They used that family as an "EXPERIMENT" to justify their incompetence. They saw it unfolding and turned a blind eye to it because it was gonna make a good story in three years time. AGAIN. DERELICT.

April 24, 2006 -- THE shocking beating of a teenage girl by her fa ther that aired during a Diane Sawyer report about dysfunctional stepfamilies has set off a firestorm.
State police officials in upstate Lake Placid say they are going over the tape of last Friday's "Primetime" news magazine to determine if charges can be brought against the natural father, a Iraq War military reservist, and the teen's stepmother.

The investigation - which includes the local Franklin County DAs office, police said - was only part of the fallout from the broadcast.

Outraged viewers have filled up the ABC News Web site's message board with more that 1,400 messages in the first 36 hours after the broadcast - many calling for Sawyer and the program's producers to be fired for not going to the authorities immediately.

The beating was caught on videotape recorders that the family - identified as Lynn and Joe Nelson - had allowed ABC News to install in their home for a program on the difficulties stepfamilies have getting along.

The family had control of the cameras and could turn them off at any time.

ABC News officials said in a statement that by the time they had reviewed the tapes, the father "had been sent to the National Guard training camp and then onto Iraq. Kyle [the daughter] had moved in with her grandparents - where she remains to date."

"DA Furious 'Primetime Live' Didn't Report Teen Beating

Tuesday , April 25, 2006

By Don Kaplan

NEW YORK — A furious upstate New York prosecutor wants to question ABC News officials about why they did not report a father beating his 15-year-old daughter that aired last week on "Primetime Live."

"Clearly a crime was committed right there on TV," said Derek Champagne, DA of Franklin County, near Lake Placid.

"I'm obviously outraged that the first time I see what would appear to clearly be child abuse ... in our own backyard is on a national news program," he told The Post Monday.

The Franklin County DA and the New York State Bureau of Criminal Investigation are conducting a joint investigation into the shocking beating of a young teenager captured on video and broadcast last Friday on "Primetime Live" in a Diane Sawyer feature about the the difficulties stepfamilies endure.

The family — identified as Lynn and Joe Nelson, his 15-year-old daughter, Kyle, and Lynn's three younger children — are at the center of a storm of outrage from viewers who are upset that the beating was apparently not reported to authorities.

The beating was recorded by fixed cameras the family allowed ABC News to install in their home in rural Vermontville, N.Y.

"From a moral aspect, it's unconsciousable that someone can watch [this] and not contact my office or the appropriate authorities," Champagne said.

State troopers reported receiving "hundreds" of phone calls from viewers after the show aired.

In a statement released Monday by ABC News, Kyle Nelson said that she "wants everyone to know that she loves her father very much, that this unfortunate incident is not characteristic of their relationship."

The controversy has grown so strong that the family appeared Tuesday with Sawyer on "Good Morrning America."

The incident was recorded sometime in late 2002 or early 2003, the network says. The tapes were not collected until some time later.

Champagne says that there is a possibility that the statute of limitations may have run out as a result.

"And if that's the case," he says, "I'm going to search for criminal liability, culpability or responsibility on the part of people who knew about this conduct and didn't do anything about it."

"While we felt the incident in question was disturbing, it was the only scene of physical punishment in the hundreds of hours of footage that ABC News reviewed," network news officials said in a statement Monday. "There was no other indication that Kyle or the other three children were in physical danger."

Kyle has since moved out and lives with her grandparents.

Most of them were exact copies of eachother, prolly taken of the AP or UPI wires.

What do you think of her defending her father? Truly an isolated incident, or a case of the abused defending their abuser? I know several people who have slapped their teenaged daughters ONCE when they got to an age where they thought they could mouth off, or do what they wanted. I DID not see the footage, so I have no basis for opinion.

One girl, at 16, told her Mom, you cant make me do anything you bitch, pushed her aside, and tried to get out the door. My friend grabbed her & she said, F-You you cant do anything to me, Ill call child services. Her mom smacked her across the face, and said, NEVER speak to you mother that way again. Then she walked over, called child services, told them she smacked her daughter & why, handed her daughter the phone & said...here ya go! Of course, CS didnt do anything except tell her she had no right to push her Mom or talk to her that way, and that if she'd like to be placed in a foster home, they'd be happy to interview her.

Now, they are the best of friends...she's a straight A senior at MSU; and she NEVER mouthed off like that again.

I am NOT condoning real abuse, or violence...I have just seen so many Good, Well-raised children hit this point in their teens, when they flaunt Child Services in their parents faces as a dare to get away with anything. And then get physical their parents. Its a challenge-authority age.

So, was it a one-time he snapped cause she called him a liar, or was he consistantly abusive?

I am totally against belligerent teenagers that mouth off and are abusive to their Moms... this was not the case with Kyle.

It was awful. She was a modern day Cinderella . Her step-mom was vile and cruel to her, it was uncanny, that step-moms verbal and mental abuse. The step-mom egged on the real Dad because she hated Kyle so much. He became outraged when Lynn (the evil step-mom) was in the room, because Lynn would "set it up" .... it was so obvious to millions of viewers , Kyle was not the problem. Lynn would set her up time and time again, on tape, berating her , yelling and screaming at her. Kyle was adorable with the three smallest half-siblings. Lynn hated her for that too! The incident of the beating seemed like Dad just lost it, because Lynn was always there setting Kyle up. They were yelling and screaming at her for losing her homework (Kyle has ADD, but a lot of viewers now suspect it is PTSD). Kyle barely said her dad was a liar... you could barely hear her. Before that she asked if she could leave the room while they were both yelling and screaming.

Then it happened... he slapped her, then he jumped on the couch where she was sitting and punched her , closed fist, and punched her four more times while he was straddling her. Lynn was down further on the couch making these "shadow-boxing" movements with her hands , like she was punching Kyle too! It was so sick ... I have seen a lot of teen behavior too. Kyle was nothing like that. She was so mentally and emotionally beaten down. It outraged thousands and thousands of viewers.

People are mainly outraged now that ABC made so much money off of Kyle's abuse, AND NEVER REPORTED IT!

Everyone on the Primetime forum has their suspicions as to why ABC never reported the abuse and went on to air the show anyways. Of course, most suspect the reason is the show's profits. One of my suspicions also is that one of the psychologists on the show has a book. Dr. Patricia Papernow is author of "Becoming a Stepfamily". The posters on the Primetime forum are very incensed that ABC would think the viewers would not figure out that ABC's greed overcame their and the psychologists duty to report abuse.

'FUROR OVER HIDDEN-CAMERA BEATING ON PRIMETIME
Tuesday, April 25 2006
Viewers have flooded ABC's switchboards and posted hundreds of messages on the network's website complaining about Friday's Primetime broadcast about dysfunctional "step-families" in which a father was shown hitting his teenage daughter. Many demanded to know why the network did not show the tape to police and have the man arrested, pointing out that he appeared to be a menace not only toward the daughter but three other small children living in the house. In a statement on Monday ABC said, "This was the only scene of physical punishment in the hundreds of hours of footage." It noted that the girl, Kyle Nelson, moved out of the house shortly after the incident occurred in Dec. 2002. On today's (Tuesday) Good Morning America, three psychologists who appeared on the Primetime program agreed that after viewing the tapes they saw numerous incidents of "inappropriate parenting" but no safety issue. However, one of the psychologists, Dr. Patricia Papernow, author of Becoming a Stepfamily, took the program's producers to task for repeatedly airing the violent footage throughout the program. "When you expose viewers to a piece of violent tape over and over again, it's traumatizing to viewers," Papernow remarked. Dianne Sawyer, who hosts Good Morning America and hosted the Primetime special, lifted her right hand and replied, "I'm taking the pledge here. It won't happen again. It really will not happen again." '

The second article is from www.nationalenquirer.com/

'DIANE SAWYER IN ABUSE FIRESTORM

Outraged viewers are calling for ABC to fire Diane Sawyer following a report that aired on dysfunctional stepfamilies on Frieday's Primetime. The episode showed a young girl being beaten in a segment about the difficulties stepfamilies have getting along. The parents, identified as Lynn and Joe Nelson, allowed ABC News to install cameras in which they could turn off at any time. However, a beating was caught on tape and upset viewers. State police officials in Lake Placid, New York say they are going over the tape to determine if charges can be brought against the natural father, a Iraq War military reservist, and the teen's stepmother. ABC News officials said in a statement that by the time they had reviewed the tapes, the father "had been sent to the National Guard training camp and then onto Iraq. ABC took down the link of the actual beating. It's not the worst thing I've seen on a video, after all we unfortunately view war photos and films all the time, so it was not really graphic. But it was very disturbing to see that this girl was NOT being disciplined, but abused instead. And the fact that ABC filmed it, never reported, and made money off of the film in the show is what has caused the firestorm in the viewer audience! ABC is evil evil.gif

But you can see the interview with Kyle this morning on GMA (when the photo goes to "Stepfamilies , etc") , then click on the video beneath it:

They are the three that chose NOT to report the abuse on the film of child beating in the ABC Primetime show last Friday. State police in Franklin County NY are looking into seeing if these three have culpability since NY has mandatory reporting laws for psychologists.

Yep, I have been on the other forum, and they continue to delete my threads and replies.

Some people wanted to contact the therapists to ask questions, complain, others wanted to report them to authorities regarding their lack of action.

These therapists seemed to be sugar coating and covering theirs and ABC's butts.

Their reactions on PrimeTime to the tapes they were reviewing seemed to imply that they were horrified by the actions of the Father and Step Mother, yet they coddled them when confronted.

I had previously found all the email addresses for the therapists, but some bio pages had been temporarily unavailable, so I had to do some searching to find them again.

Welcome ! Seems we found a haven over here from "Delete City"! It's unconscionable that ABC and the three psychologists are more worried about their CYA now, much more than the child at the time. Seems the state police in Franklin County are taking an interest in opening an investigation into ABC and the therapists.

As I just love to search the internet, this was the only forum that resulted.

The child involved is now 18, and on GMA yesterday morning she requested that the video not be re-played. I think they took it off the site too, because of Kyle's request. I fully respect her request, ABC has humiliated her with this video being replayed on Primetime several times last Friday. Kyle's interview yesterday on GMA is on the ABC site, however.

Sb7447, you are more than welcome here. And I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to discuss this topic at length. As far as I am concerned, you can tell other people they are welcome to come discuss it here. I think this is fine in Watercooler, but could also be in Media or Society forums. Mailing address: American Psychological Association, 750 First Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002-4242
Telephone: (800) 374-2721 or (202) 336-5500

---------------------This was the communication from the Ethics office.---------

Unless the viewers notify the Ethics office in writing they will not be able to contrust an investigation. The process of a ethics complaint is private, any review is confidential. Can't acknowledge or can acknowledge on the phone.

The lady I spoke with was very concerned and requested that we fax the web site links, publications, radio links, or any "proof" of the investigation, otherwise the Ethics committee wouldn't be able to do anything, and Dr. James Bray would be able to run for president.

She said that the fax number was a number directly to the ethics office and a 24 hours fax line.

Please fax all links of investigation story to:

202-336-5997 and attention it to Ethics Office

I explained that this was all over the web, that the DA was investigating this, and the other two therapists of criminal activity by not turning the abuse in to the authorities. To date they haven't notified the abuse to authorities.

She was interested in the other two names of the therapists as well! "

sb7447, was it you that had the thread about one of the ABC therapists running for president of the American Psychological Association? I opened a thread about it at ABC forum(believe it or not it is still up laugh.gif ) and there is lots of discussion going on about filing an ethics complaint on him before he wins an election for prez of APA. Some people have provided info and fax on how to file the complaint. If NO complaint is processed at all, HE COULD STILL BECOME PREZ OF APA! eek.gif Here is the ABC thread:

That was me...I have been doing more reading than posting lately. I post what I find.

Katherine, Kyle's natural Mom posted today at ABC forum. A lot of us posters had been getting together the idea of a college fund for Kyle, even to request that ABC/Disney compensate her with a full scholarship. The idea has been floating around the forum for a week. Kyle's Mom must've heard and read that so many people are really pulling for Kyle and her educational/financial future, so she posted today for the first time on the forum about a trust fund set up in Kyle's name. Let me clarify that it was not Katherine's idea, but the posters of the forum, someone had even generated a petition for Kyle's college fund. Katherine was simply letting us know the opportunity is now there since we requested it, if we so desire to donate to Kyle's trust fund. Her original post was on the forum , but ABC took it down and put the statement on a seperate link from the forum, as if it was ABC's idea. I guess the forum posters put ABC to shame... not hard to do these days wry2.gif :

On behalf of Kyle, my parents and myself I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have offered words of support, encouragement and hope for my daughter. We would like you all to know how deeply your support has touched us.
Kyle has been living happily with my parents for over two and a half years now and has been able to move on with her life in a positive and forgiving manner. She is a strong and compassionate young woman who I am sure will do well in life. Many of you have inquired as to ways that you can help Kyle and the question of an educational fund has come up; to that regards Kyle has set up an account at a local bank. This account is in her name only and if it grows to a substantial amount, a local accountant, chosen by Kyle, will administer the account.
Please know that we are not asking for donations; your thoughts, prayers and good wishes are enough but for those wanting to do more here is the chance.

Any donations may be sent directly to:
NBT, National Bank and Trust
2483 Main Street
Lake Placid, New York 12946

All donations need to have Kyle's name on them and the account number; Kyle A. Nelson, account number 021303618. If you wish to do some sort of money transfer the bank's routing number is 8001851262.

Once again we wish to thank all of you who offer your continued support of Kyle and her siblings.

Katherine

Please post freely to other outlets as you see fit. "

I had previously found all the email addresses for the therapists, but some bio pages had been temporarily unavailable, so I had to do some searching to find them again.

sb, were the three therapists reacting , or acting instead ? Was what we saw of them on the air cringing, wincing and grimacing at the child abuse video, was that the
first time they actually saw it?

I am not techie as some of the "younger" regulars here... also TJ, this siteowner is very techie. Hopefully some of them geniuses will step forward and bend your ear wink.gif (either here , or by this site's (PM) personal message system). Go to the Welcome Forum and introduce yourself and state your purpose... you might get swamped with techie advice then!

It seemed as though it was the first time the therapists saw the video. They were presented by PrimeTime as first time viewer of the tapes. The question is, did they sit there and watch the 1200+hrs of tape all at once, or just the clips that were 'reality tv' worthy?

My big beef is that the therapists seemed so shocked and disgusted, until they sat down and coddled Lynn and Joe. I know they have to appear impartial, but COME ON. In statements ABC has said that therapy was continued with the family members, ABC should have choosen a better glimpse into this so-called therapy, given the viewers...heck, I don't know what they could have given us, maybe Lynn hung up by her toes...this story was just all wrong, beginning, middle, and well, no end really.

I tried the Google page creator, but it didn't have my country listed.

I thought I would try a blog, do you think that would be an ok idea?

Different variety of the same thing.
Yes, that would work.

Now I need techie advice, if you know this one, how much do you charge sky? (willing to pay top dollar TO GET RID OF AOL !) tongue.gif

I have all kinds of aol stuff on my computer, NOT of my choice... somehow they "invaded" and put all kinds of nonsense in my harddrive and even an AOL toolbar on my web. Someone at Primetime forum said AOL blocks you from signing on ABC Primetime forum ... for some reason it just started blocking me today, even though I've had this crappy AOL toolbar all along. I did a search of my hard-drive of anything that says
AOL, and got a little slap-happy deleting all their stuff. I saw an AOL toolbar file, and when I tried to delete that , it says some ridiculous thing that I don't have permission to delete it , or something like that. I don't know if I was supposed to uninstall before I delete, but somehow I did make the AOL toolbar disappear. But now when I try to sign-on to Primetime forum , it goes to that "page cannot be displayed" page. I think I must've deleted to much stuff, or didn't uninstall properly .... maybe I just need to shutdown and boot up again. AOL sucks mad.gif

sb has generated a wonderful thing!

She created an activism blog to follow through to the end on the investigations on ABC and the three therapists of the exploitive and sensationalistic Primetime show of April 21st, 2006 :
