The movie "THEY LIVE" isn't a NEW movie, but....

They Live

By Lou Dagostino

In 1988, John Carpenter began filming a sci-fi movie starring WWF superstar "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. That movie was called THEY LIVE. The movie is based on the idea that aliens are walking among us, only they have holographic-like human skin, so no one suspects it. These aliens control everything on Earth as they have been around for years. They use holographic images to cover up subliminal messages that are being pounded into our brains through the media.

One day, an out of work man played by Piper finds a job working construction where he meets Frank (played by Keith David). Frank is living in California trying to earn money to send back to Detroit to support his wife and kids. he'd be in Detroit working, but the factory that he worked at was shut down due to the horrendous economic planning of one, Ronald Reagan. Frank takes Piper back to a poor community where food is readily available thanks to a church program that doubles as an underground rebellion against the aliens. Piper stumbles across a pair of sunglasses. produced by these church people. that allow him to see through the alien holographs.

With these sunglasses, Piper sees the world in black and white. He also sees the hidden messages behind advertisements and money. The dollar bill now reads, "This is your God." Billboards now read such things as "Consume," "Conform," or "Watch TV." The social commentary in the film is pretty brilliant as not only are the messages shown as propaganda created to turn us into sheep, but furthermore, he sees these messages in black and white. Get it? Black and white. Anyway, what ensues are some brilliant one liners such as Piper walking into a bank with the sunglasses on and a shotgun and saying, "I've come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, but I'm all out of bubblegum." Then, he begins shooting the aliens.

Anyone who can get through the first twenty minutes of the film which are necessarily slow, showing the gloom of the depression, and just how much a complete fool of a President really does affect our lives, is bound to love this film. It is a funny, action-packed, provocative piece of social commentary on the herd mentality of Americans, an era of economic hardship created largely by a President that many Republicans still maintain was one of the most brilliant leaders our nation has ever known, and on the human state in general as the end of the movie has an interesting twist to it. It's a film that is very hard to find, but I suggest you seek it out. It seems fitting that with the economy as it is now, we should all think of the people who are bearing the hardship the most. In the words of "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, who lived on the streets for years in his youth, "A society that forgets about its poor has some real problems."

Cult classic it is.

I've seen a picture blending the concept of THEY LIVE and Bush giving a speach.
But I didn't coppy it. unsure.gif Guess I should have.

Max, there's a very good (and long) discussion about the movie They Live

at: http://www.smirkingchimp.com/viewtopic.php...c=30818&forum=3

You'll have to go back to the beginning of the discussion, which I think began sometime ago. But I think you'll enjoy it! biggrin.gif
