I run every major labor union, every PTA association, and every IRS agent apparently bows their knee to me, whenever I snap my fingers. I control jackbooted armies of lawyers that use junk science to undermine the business of corporations- legions of federal regulators who's only aim is to subvert industry, and an endless horde of homosexuals, feminists, activists, peacenicks, vegetarians, atheists, and hollywood executives. Despite the systematic increase of republican control over every level of government, I am a force that is universal, unstoppable, and so posessed of a rapacious lust for power, that I will not rest until my control is absolute. You see- I'm part of the "Liberal Elite". I didn't know about this- I thought I was just an unemployed web developer, just trying to get by in a rapidly-sinking economy. I usually can't get the light to change when I want to- but now, apparently, I am in command of forces that control life at every level, and my power is growing, every day. Now- how did I come to this conclusion? Well, I spent a few hours on the Freeper newswires over at Free Republic, and I found it to be a strangely surreal landscape of perverse ego-bosting. I can't pay my electric bill or get a job scrubbing toilets, but apparently, simply because I believe in the progressive/liberal agenda, I am part of the most powerful force that has ever existed in this country... But hey- let's get serious here, for a second... We know the above power-fantasy is a prize load of bullplop- The media is solidly in the hands of the conservatives. The courts, on all levels, have been filled with more and more conservative judges (conservatives like to use the term "activist judges"- strange how liberal jurisprudence is called "activism", while right-wing jurisprudence gets a green light). The environmental and business regulations that I'd like to see (regulations, coincidentally- that every other industrialized country has already passed into law), are being rolled back, on every front. But, for some reason- the red-state freeper base still believes that people like you and I are still exercising complete, ufettered control of the course of our media, our social mores, and our national discourse. Why is this? This last election, although won through methods that are suspect at best, have brought the red staters within a five-vote margin of a fillibuster-proof majority (something they're most likely to remedy in 2006), solidified republican control of state governorships and legislatures, and made sure that the supreme court remains in republican hands for at least the next four years- possibly longer, barring a heart attack or two. But go to free republic, and you'd get the impression that none of this matters- despite all of this, I, and my fellow liberals, are SOLIDLY in control of where this country is going... The reason for this? Well- it's because of a certain mind-shift within the red state mentality. Author Thomas Frank, in his book "What is the Matter with Kansas" labels it "The backlash". It is a movement of a complexity that would take pages to explain fully, here, but it has it's precedent within the body politic. Basically, whenever a social and demographic group is systematically disenfranchised, driven into poverty, and find their day-to-day interests ignored by the powers that be, they: 1: Seek the comradre of shared hardship, which can be the strongest bond known to man. 2: Revert to an often hypocritical adherence to a spartan black-and-white view of the world, often centered around the prevailing religious tenets held by those stuck in point #1 3: Develop a collective, generational abhorrence to those that they feel are responsible for their predicament (which can be defined or re-deifned, as conditions allow- see below)- an abhorrence that will cause them to act, in many cases, against their own self-interest. Now- the republican party, in its current state- cannot be defined as conservative, or favorable to the poor, and certainly not favorable to the systematically disenfranchised- however- they siezed upon the recognition of this mass lumpenproletariat, and took the offensive. They brought their message to these people- and instead of focussing on matters that are close to home- such as the declining standard of living, the poor educational system, and the crumbling infrastructure- they capitalized on point #2, above, and framed the argument: "The problem isn't that you don't have money in your bank account, or that you don't have the money to put food on your family (sic bush), it's that our country has been siezed by people who are elitists- they want to CONTROL YOUR LIVES." The last thing that these folks want, is more control- they've suffered under neglect, and have seen it as control. Touching on hotbutton issues, they framed the debate into an "us versus them" paradigm, in which issues that SHOULD have mattered (IE- education, healthcare, and infrastructure), were supplanted by issues that mean very little (such as gay marriage, etc.) How did they do this? They took a page from the books of dictators past, and they capitilized on the anger of the disenfranchised, and told them: Feel hopeless? Don't blame the corporation that's ruining your environment, and cutting your wages- blame the LIBERAL ELITE- They want to TAX you- they want to GET INTO THE MINDS OF YOUR CHILDREN, and UNDERMINE YOUR RIGHT TO OWN A GUN (Even if the republicans raise taxes more, on average, than the democrats, want to do away with public education, altogether, and most of the poor disenfranchised don't even have the werewithal to purchase a firearm- it's the THOUGHT that matters- not the action.) Inject into this a great deal of anger, and outrage. This is essential- turn on Fox "News", and you'll see it- Despite the total control over our government by the republican party, they remain ANGRY- HOW DARE YOU QUESTION US IN A TIME OF WAR, etc, etc. And why are they angry? Well- that brings us back home... They're angry at a ghost phantom that never existed, and doesn't exist today: This undefined, supremely powerful "Liberal Elite", that, as long as they are free to define things, is the single, most powerful force in this country today. And that brings me to the most frightening thing: To be a true adherent of the Bush/neocon/fox agenda, to truly believe that "liberal elitists" like you and I are in supreme control, is to adhere to a political philosophy that has at its heart the kernel of eternal defeatism. No matter how much power you gain- no matter how many news organizations you control, now matter how many senators are in your corner, now matter how many governors or supreme court justices you have as a result of your votes or activism- it doesn't matter- because the LIBERAL ELITE is still there. It is, in fact, contrary to the most fundamental tenets of conservatism- that one should take responsibility for one's own actions- screw responsibility- blame the "Liberal Elite" The LIBERAL ELITE is in control of the media, after all- and is poisoning your child's mind with images of black men kissing white women (or vice versa)- never mind that Fox "news" is but one scion of News Corp, which is the purveyor of the most mindless TV available, today. The LIBERAL ELITE is in control of the Judiciary- never mind that the supreme court, and just about every court, downwards, is stacked with republican-appointed judges- You never can trust them lawyers. They're all homo-loving antichristian activists, after all- remember that flier we got from Pat Robertson a few weeks back? The LIBERAL ELITE is in control of the environmental movement, so it doesn't matter that our son got mercury poisoning from tapwater, as a result of environmental rollbacks signed into law by Bush, by executive order- he's a good christian, and knows what's right, after all- besides, if the LIBERAL ELITE had had it's way, the local turpentine plant would have had to add runoff filters, and that would have cost the company millions, which would have led to layoffs (and DAMN IT- don't DARE to say that the CEO might have shaved off a few hundred K from his salary to pay for them- you LIBERAL ELITE always have to punish the SUCCESSFUL.) The LIBERAL ELITE is in control of the educational system- even though our textbooks have to pass muster under our state's republican-appointed approval body, and are given about 60% of the funding of what they need to handle the classes that they have. My son came home, and talked about the earth being millions of years old- god DAMN you LIBERAL elites- pushing your evolutionist agenda down his throat (oh, and as an aside- my son came home with a stained pair of underpants, because you folks say your funding won't allow you to buy toilet tissue- TYPICAL LIBERALS!) I could go on- but you get the picture. It doesn't matter how much power these people accrue for the republican party, through their apathy, their blind adherence to an unidentifiable political philosophy, or their willful ignorance. They are blameless- the fault lies with you, and I... Why? Because we're the "liberal elite". We have the power of gods, and the omnipresence that dictators of the past could only dream of. Lot of good it does me. The country is going down the toilet, and I guess, because the republicans say I control it, it's all my fault, even though the people I oppose hold all the strings of power. If only I were an effeminate neocon boy with blonde hair, and a lot of cash- then I could be like Ann Coulter, and get a sex change operation. Then, I could stick like a leech on the warted hide of the neocon movement, and make a living out of making an ass out of myself, instead of just ranting away on a website.. |

| Your article looks interesting, but before I read it, I'd like to note that the term "liberal elite" is a misnomer (read: a lie spread by conservatives). The truly elite of this country are conservative. Nearly all of them. Factoid: Conservatives eat more brie than liberals. |
