Full Version: Negotiating with terrorists

Last night I was watching ol Larry King and he had a plethera of guests on to talk about the Jill Carroll kidnapping by terrorist deal.

A lot of yada-yada bullshit went back and forth...Larry asked each of his 400 guests if "we" should negotiate with terrorists. Of course, everyone said no...The interesting part is when he came to an Al Jazzera reporter, an Iraqi...he said that you shouldn't negotiate, because it only propogates the violence. BUT he said that a huge mistake that is made is this: after the "crisis" is over, no one ever tries to resolve the issue that brought such a brash move in the first place. He said that when a group goes so far as to kidnap someone just so that their story gets attention, that there is something that needs to be worked on. They, the "terrorist", still have a problem or grievance that needs to be looked at. They don't just kidnap people for fun, it's for attention to their cause.

I found this amazing and fascinating. Why doesn't the government do that? Seriously, it's not like these kidnappers want a ransom, so they are not in it for the money, and it's my belief that most of them are not in it just to kill people for sport...so why isn't there more focus on trying to negotiate after the crisis is over? Wonder what would happen if people realized that there were people who did care about their plight? I don't buy the US line that "they" just want to ruin "our freedom", that's complete bullshit. A roadside bomb in Iraq is meant to get attention for something that's going on in Iraq. Wonder what needs to happen to stop it before it goes to the point of using bombs? Wonder why these people feel so hopeless that their only "option" is to use bombs? I don't really think that when the US thinks they've found a bomber, and they blow up like 14 houses filled with people to kill that ONE person they have done anything but frustrate the situation more.

I know that was sort of rambly...but I think there is something to this. It seems so simple.........

They dont care?

Just imagine how we would be reacting if an invading country was doing here what America is doing in Iraq. Raodside bombs would be just a small part of the resistance we'd put up. There might even be a few kidnappings, regardless of the reason for their happening. I seem to remember an old movie entitled "Red October" that had a similar theme... (The sad part is we ARE being "invaded" but it's not being done by a foreign country! mad.gif )

What I find most amazing is how OBL seems to readily surface, gets himself dusted off, has his voice put on a tape or both his voice and face put on film, and then he's paraded out as the "boogyman" everytime Bushco gets into deep doodoo. Like the reporter said, he hasn't been heard from in over a year...I think the last time was just before the "election." tongue.gif

Anyone else notice this? They ran the "terra alerts" right into the ground, so I guess they have to have OBL out there now to make even one of those seem valid.

Just muddying the waters, and taking the nation snipe hunting....one more time. thumbdown.gif

That's the sort of thing SOME of us were saying BEFORE we invaded Iraq!
And we still are!

It is impossible to stem the tide of terrorism simply by killing all the terrorists! (or putting them in secret prisons)
All that we successfully do is dig deeper into the quagmire!
This is such an effective solution for NEVER solving the problem that many of us suspect it is in fact deliberate!

Much of the issue between "THEM" and "US" have to do with culture.
A Bias on both sides based almost entirely on ignorance!

Imagine if just one side asked the other,
"what the fuck IS your problem?"
And then actually LISTENED to the reply!!!!!

I have thought about that so many times too, Catherine. These suicide bombers, they are not the same breed as robbers that kill at banks and convenience stores... they are killing themselves and others because of the overwhelming anguish that an invasion has done to them and their family & property, body, mind, & spirit... Shock & Awe is just that.... it shocked the living daylights out of real human beings. They are simply reacting to evil actions against them. How are they supposed to react "appropriately"... they do not have access to a personal psychological counselor in the midst of invasion. We have to deal with our young adult soldiers dying, and they are dealing with their young children dying... it must be the worst feeling in the world sad.gif

The movie is "Red Dawn" staring Patric Swazy(sp? The guy from road house). I remeber it from when I was a kid. It was about Russia invading America and a few teenagers mount a resistence.
Gadzooks!
It is abundantly clear to me that the kidnapping of American reporters, social workers and war profiteers on foreign soil is an attempt by the peoples of those countries to bring the terrorists, us, to the negotiating table. I think that if they are willing to negotiate with terrorists, then so should we be.
