WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a clash of first ladies, Laura Bush said on Thursday it was ridiculous for New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton to say the House of Representatives under Republican rule is being run like a "plantation."
The Clinton comment during a Martin Luther King holiday speech on Monday evoked memories of America's slavery past and racial tensions.
Clinton, a Democrat who was first lady when her husband, Bill Clinton, was president, had said in New York's Harlem that Republicans had run the House "like a plantation" with no dissent or ideas from the minority Democrats allowed.
"I think it's ridiculous, it's a ridiculous comment. That's what I think," Laura Bush, the current first lady, told reporters on her plane on the flight home from a trip to Africa.
Clinton is said to be considering a run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008.
