Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are [a] few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.
— President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 11/8/54

I keep seeing this quote everywhere, so I figured I should share it here as well.

IKE...bet he didn't know he was actually talking about people who would arise within his own party 45+ years later and try to establish an evil regime similar to the one in Europe Ike had just helped to defeat.

Isn't it ironic...dontcha think...

A recent survey asked our favorite Republican president. Ike was okay in my book, and apparently had a lot of insight into the perils our country might face that are only now unfolding. The following oft repeated quote is another ironic example of his wisdom and foresight:

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together

Yes, how ironic that the general who won WWII, and became President of the United States, tried to warn us about the danger of the growth of the military-industrial complex, and his own party took the MIC to an unheard of level, and eventually used it in exactly the way he warned us about.

Today's Republicans have no idea about Eisenhower's words. If you quote Eisenhower to a modern Republican, he will ignore you.
