POAC
What do you mean by private?

What do you mean by IP?

You mean IP adresses?

private to whom? What do ya mean? I just want to be sure what you are asking.
Radical Liberal
Sorry.

Can moderators/admins see our IP addresses?

On other message baords I've been to if you are a mod there is an IP button by the persons post. just curious.
POAC
Yes. I can see your IP addy. I also have a trace option where I can track down the network from where it originates, and in many cases, right to your home. It's not uncommon. Every website has this ability. That's how we ban people. Through the ip address.
Radical Liberal
Thanks.
Radical Liberal
I have to post for you to see my IP right?
POAC
Nope. Anyone who is logged in and just lurking can be seen. And the main POAC page control panel shows the ip addys of the hits we recieve. It's nothing to worry about. Every online forum/website is this way. But it is a good thing to pay attention to the privacy policy of a website if you have concerns.

here's ours:

RL,

Some Boards let peep specify ANY URL for Avatars, Sigs, and Pics. (I've not looked at what this board does.) However, your IP is NOT private, from MEMBERS of boards as described in the 1st sentence. OTHER BOARDS are WISE to how members gain other members IP's using these rather obvious tactics, and ONLY permit URL's for any kind of pic to come from their own Server. --- For those boards, your IP is "private" in as much as non-Mod's not knowning your IP.

However, my experience over the years within countless boards is that non-Mod members RARELY mess with you, while Mods, that on EVERY Site know your IP, do all sorts of stuff, via their knowledge of your IP, despite the protestations that "no Mods here" would "ever do such things".

HERE IS A TIP.... You CAN prevent NON-Mod users from gaining access to your IP by simply setting your Browser to NOT DISPLAY PICTURES. In that way, you will never connect to a user's PC/Server to grab any kind of pic, and in doing so, "give away" your own IP. OBVIOUSLY, you need to turn off displaying pictures in your Browser BEFORE you enter ANY Forum, NOT AFTER you are there! lol

I follow my own advise, as recommended above, particularly in a politically oriented Web Site, untill I look at the capabilities given to user's via the Editor, and within their Profs.

As you can see.... "IMG" in the editor, permits any image's URL to be specified, and only a Site that subsequently scans for, or disables URLS of Pics not taken from a list of pics on their own site would prevent your IP from being known to any member that specifies their own URL, from which to pick up a PIC.

The opposite side of the coin is that YOU by looking at your Firewall log, ALSO know member's IP's. However, if 1 member target's you, out of 20, and all 20 dislike your posts, it's rather impossible to determine which of the members are targetting your machine, unless your Firewall catches CONNECTIONS, as opposed to REJECTED connections. (All too many Firewalls do not. A good PORT SNIFFER,
with a log, would be THE WAY to begin diagnosing which IP belongs to someone targetting you.) On the other hand, any moron that goes for that sort of stuff would be a bit too dumb to be classified as a moron, if they didn't SPOOF their own IP, when attacking you. Thus, unless you've the cooperation of ppl at a lower level, you can pretty much forget knowning ANY SERIOUS attacker's IP. AND it is a complete waste of time to complain to your ISP, cause they won't do squat for you!

The best solution to the problem is to have a ROUTER, AND A FIREWALL, AND CUSTOMIZE THAT FIREWALL over the course of several months. Firewalls aren't worth anything, "out of the box". I assure you.... as a Pro in this biz since '81.

And does this apply to all private party IP Tracers?
How about those who legally hack into wifi?

Certainly.

You appear to be referring to spyware. That stuff is embedded in your PC, so ...
sure it knows your IP, and every IP you go to, if it's designed to do that...which it usually is.

As per the general subject of hacking... I'm not any authority on it, and it holds little to no interest for me, beyond knowing what I should know to setup a decent Firewall. But as to your question on wifi hacking ...

I've heard of wifi hacking only in the context of someone hacking your own wifi network (at home). Firewalls are building in measures against if. At least mine has wifi protection, but I have no wifi network, and such networks at home have a very limitted range.

Again, I'm no expert on that subject, as I've no wifi to be concerned about. What's above is the extent of my knowledge about it, except for the delivery of viruses from mobile devices onto the Net. But I don't think that is what you were referring to.

Free and legal hacking of wifi.

In other words, Finding a free zone.
Many placed even advertize their freezone,
and many people are working for a national freezone.

In such a case, who's IP would the IP tracer Read?

Port sniffers, pingers, you seem to know quite a bit about hacking.
Much more than me because I only make it look as if I know anything about the subject.

I might have misunderstood your point, but given my reading of it, I can say this....

IP's are used in wifi land, too.

Some phones have fixed IP's allocated from a range of IP's designed to the company whose Servers they connect to when they get a connection to the Net.

Other fones are allocated a dynamic (pooled) IP, just as the typical Web Surfer. Again, the pool of IP's is a designated range assigned for use by the provider.

There is a 3rd type if IP sometimes referred to as Non-Translatable IP's, or a similar term that can be found via a who is lookup. Again, there are specific ranges for those IP's and they can be used by any Server, but are not intended to be handed to your ISP, unless your ISP agrees to knowing the IP's on your own network by those numbers, since your own ISP is also entiitled to use those ranges of IP's and assign them, within there own immediate network, however they choose to. --- One partial IP in this range that might ring a bell is: 192.168.x.x There are several well-defined ranges for these non-translatable IP's that can be found in a variety of documents on the Net. (I have them copied down, and always block them via my firewall, from talking to my stand-alone PC.)

SOM,

As I said, I've been doing software development since 1981. I've worked on mainframes, minis, and PC's, and with Windows exclusively since '94.

If you were in my field for 25 years and had NO idea what a Port Sniffer was, or
even what several Ports are used for .... just off the top of your head, I would recommend that you find another profession.

BTW. If you think I know plenty about hacking, it's only due to how little you know about my own profession, and how disinterested I am in hacking has put me at a disadvantage in building the kind of Firewall that I would like to build (given how absolutely useless Firewalls are "out of the box").

However, if you would like to imagine me as a hacker, it's your delusion, not mine.

T2

Nope, I don't wish to imagine anything.

You almost said my point.
It is that I do not know what you do or don't know.
The nature of this thing is that I have to assume to some degree.

The cyber world is not a place for any naive persons.
Or they won't be naive for very long!

Aside from the topic of IP's, I couldn't have put that much better myself, clearly
there are some Golden Rules on the Net. Too few know, understand, or even agree with that, and none of my attempts to convince any of them otherwise
has amounted to a hill of beans.

Clearly, Golden Rule 1a) and 1b) are: Trust nobody, and believe no one.

I don't agree. Why even be on the net in a discussion forum if you think everyone is a liar?

The liars are in Washington DC, they are not here.

2 points

first,) this wasn't a contest to be won or lost!
The question isn't about ego.

second,) one doesn't need to assume everyone is a liar,
but one should always assume that anyone COULD be!

Similarly,
The person who says they might be wrong,
is also saying they might yet have something to learn!
You see, 1 and 2 are infact part of the same answer.

True. I thought we we're talking about IP's.

I'm perfectly happy to refrain from some debates for a variety of reasons.
In this case, it's because IMO the material above these few posts is of greater importance and interest to anyone wanting to avoid spyware, viruses, and various misuses of their IP, by making a simple change within their Browser, whilst within some Forums, simply as a reasonable precautionary measure.
