I've heard him called the worst president ever, although I havent heard them give any reasons. He seems like a nice guy to me.

Rad,

This is totally my opinion, and based on no facts whatsoever BUT...

I think for one the repugs hate that he's a "born again" christian, but doesn't cling to their (the repugs) insane view of christianity. Rather he spends time doing things that are actually charitable, good and beneficial to mankind. I don't know enough about his presidency to say what about that pisses them off, but I am off to do some research and will update you on what I find out.

My edit is adding the information I copied below....

I bet these may be a few reasons why repugs don't like Carter.

At home, Carter's administration faced major problems in the areas of energy supply and the economy. Soon after taking office, Carter asked Congress to create a new Department of Energy. He proposed legislation to reduce oil consumption, increase U.S. oil production, and encourage the use of other energy sources. Congress approved the new department and, after much debate, some of the legislation.

In foreign policy, Carter often stressed moral principles. His goals, he said, were peace, arms control, economic cooperation, and the advancement of human rights. His efforts toward peace in the Middle East were widely acclaimed. In the fall of 1978, the leaders of Egypt and Israel met with him at Camp David, Maryland, and agreed on basic principles for a peace treaty. A treaty was signed in 1979. But negotiations on details of the peace made slow progress.

Carter concluded new treaties with Panama, giving the country control of the Panama Canal by the year 2000. These treaties were controversial, but they were ratified by the U.S. Senate in 1978. Diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China were established in 1979. In June, 1979, Carter signed a new strategic arms limitation treaty with the Soviet Union. But this treaty met with strong opposition in Congress.

Well done Lefty.

I was in my early 20's during Carters Years. I remember him well.
I recall with clarity how Reagan made his deal with Iran to have the hostages released
the day of his inaguration, so Carter would not get credit!
As he has aged, he's only become an even better human being!

An ex- president who could make hundreds of millions selling his influence,
instead makes bentwood rockers, and donates his time making houses with Habitat for Humanity!

He's one of my hero's, and a true role model.

Maybe that's a part of why the Repugs hate him?
He's just too decient?

Because he is a moral man. That's basically it. They blame him for "losing" Iran and think he should have bombed the shit out of Iran until they gave us back our hostages, as though that would have done anything.

Carter is probably the greatest US President in recent history because of his convictions and the power of his ideals. He represented the mentality that Morality and Politics can coexist, and that more than anything is why Republicans hate him--to them, Politics is about getting what you want, and Morality only has to do with stopping homosexuals from getting married.

I agree with you 110%
I think that 100 years from now Carter will be recognised as one of our greatest presidents.

Only if the prevailing American political theories change.
Gadzooks!
Wanna hear something funny? Carter commanded a nuclear submarine in the navy, and understood alternative (in the broad, nuclear-inclusive sense) energy. One of the first things he did when he moved into the white house was have solar panels installed on the roof of the white house, making it energy self-sufficient and non-petroleum dependent. A symbolic gesture, to be sure, but a strong one. He wanted to lead the nation away from dependence upon fossil fuels. When Reagan was elected, the VERY FIRST thing he did was have those solar panels torn down. The end of the beginning.

Carter had the thermostats set to 68,
Reagan promptly turned them back up to 72.

By the way, in my house the Thermostat is set at 60,
and I use a space heater where I'm at and have an electric blanket.

My last energy bill was $77.00, and it's been cold (near freezing) lately.

I think Republican morality requires you to hate the people you've raped. Because, you know, the bitch must have deserved it.

That has a comical ring to it, though it's sad because it's true!

I think the repub rationalization has to work like this:

Everything republicans do is justified.
The political destruction of Carter is justified.
Carter must have deserved to be destroyed.
Carter must be a worthless fucking bitch.

It's kinda like:

I was justified in raping her because she's a worthless fucking bitch.

It's really no wonder that they vote Republican.

Great thread. I'm too young to remember Carter (the earliest president I can remember is Reagan, but not too well).

Very informative.
