I found this board yesterday while searching for something to make me feel better about being a "liberal" who lives in the South (Mississippi specifically). I am hoping to find some kindred souls out there who can maybe help me feel less alone.

Welcome! You have come to the correct place. I too am from the south, although I've lived in Illinois for 25 years. I've found this board to be a support group for progressives.

Please don't be offended when we make disparaging comments about redneck, regressives in the red states. We all understand that there are progressives even in Mississippi, and we appreciate you.

To be a liberal is to be part of a group only in a very loose sense. It literally means open minded, a condition more applicable to individuals than groups. Here you'll find Democrats, socialists, communists, Christians, humanists, and Lord know what else. You'll like 'em.

Conservative means opposed to change, a position more easily taken by unthinking groups than one given to independent thought. Always be proud to be one of the former.

I didn't know that Sky. I'm a libr'l hillbilly from East Tennessee. Where are you from?

A small paper mill town in SW Washington state.
Although the past decade my town has decided to become upscale
and lose it's old small town charm.


My town is now run by developers, and they got a gold mine!

The 63 chev pick ups have been replaced by Lexus's and Escalades.
So many people who have moved to the new, very expensive places around the lake
don't even know there's a down town!

The high school that put out almost 50 years of students, had to be replaced with a new high school, that's much bigger and has a parking lot bigger than all of the old high school.

My town where I grew up. Everyone knew everyone, even if only by name.
Now we have two distinct social class's, that generally mix like oil and water.


Oh well, that's progress.

I'm stuck by how many of the progressives on this board either grew up in, or now live in "red" areas of the country.

The regressive Republicans always want to paint we progressives as "east coast elitists", but at least on this forum, nothing could be further from the truth.

I think "further from the truth" is a whole lot closer to the truth!

It's the words they use to deamonize.
Truth is not important.
In fact, sometimes it's a down right nuisance.

I'm salivating Sky. I hear you have some really great old VW busses out there. Not many left here in the rust belt.

Coupla life times back I actually owned a VW bus made camper van.
No flower decals though.
