It's that time of year again, when the Salvation Army bell-ringers are outside the entrances to various stores and shopping centers, ringing their bells and soliciting donations for their "charity." I used to give them money but then I found out that the Salvation Army has been one of the most active in fighting any attempts to recognize that gays and lesbians (like me) should have equal status as citizens.

Instead of just not giving them money, you can put a little something in their donation kettles that will hopefully have at least a tiny little impact and will perhaps make someone in their organization think. Instead of putting real money in their kettles, put in one or more of the following handy-dandy fake bills with a special message for the Sally Ann:

Just print copies out, cut them out, and keep them in your jacket pocket for those moments when you see a Sally Ann bell-ringer!

What a perfectly ingenious idea...if only they had backsides, so the deception wouldn't be immediately obvious!

I think the rainbow colors do that 'Bina wink.gif I think it will still do the job since only one side can be seen at a time any way.

I'll print up a few for when I go shopping. It is a great idea.

Fold it three ways so that only George's face shows as you drop it in the bucket

I use to have a soft spot for the SA: in 1957 my husband was born in a SA Memorial Hospital, which has long since been closed down.
The bell ringers get to me because they kind of make you feel guilty if you don't put something in the bucket (i'm 2 paychecks away from hitting the bottom), so, in light of this information, i will no longer feel so guilty. I hope they can come back around to being a place that helps people just because the person needs help and there is no strings attached.

That's ok I always put at least a five spot in the kettle I am teaching my two year old to help other people.

Ignore the above troll. It's pretending to be nice, but it's not.

And besides, it claims it's an atheist. Kind of an odd person to donate to a RELIGIOUS right-wing org. laugh.gif

If you are insinuating that i am teaching my children NOT to help people: my kids have put in many hours collecting food for a food drive, fixing up school grounds and caroling at a nursing home, not to mention giving their old toys and clothes to the local food pantry store.
IT's funny how you took the fact that you give money to help others and made yourself superior...kinda defeats the point, doesn't it?

mods...please forgive me, i am usually not so ruse, but it's pretty obvious what she is doing here.

Considering that right-wingers are writing policy to make the poverty worse that the Sally Ann must deal with...yeah, it kind of DOES defeat the 'winger's point! laugh.gif

And no worries, Logo, I popped him yesterday. He came back under two more aliases with spoofed IPs, but there was no doubt it was him, he picked right up where his previous alter ego left off. That's a major no-no 'round here.

WHITE HOUSE, SALVATION ARMY STRIKE SECRET DEAL ON DISCRIMINATION THROUGH FAITH-BASED INITIATIVE
Tuesday July 10, 2001

AU'S LYNN DESCRIBES BUSH ADMINISTRATION'S BACK ROOM POLITICAL DEAL AS 'SHAMEFUL'

President George W. Bush's administration has engaged in secret negotiations with the Salvation Army over the controversial faith-based initiative, which will give the religious group broad discretion to discriminate against gays with public tax dollars.

According to a report in today's Washington Post, the Salvation Army is offering political support for the beleaguered initiative in exchange for regulatory assistance, exempting the group from state and local laws that prohibit discrimination against gays in employment.

Americans United for Separation of Church and State, the nation's leading opponent of the faith-based initiative, said surreptitious White House deals with religious denominations are terribly inappropriate.

"These secret back room negotiations between the Salvation Army and the White House are shameful," said the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United. "It further demonstrates how proponents of the faith-based initiative will go to any lengths to ram this scheme into law.

"It's amazing what some groups will do for 30 pieces of silver," continued Lynn. "Before dropping money in the Salvation Army's kettles next Christmas, I'll be wondering whether my donation will be paying for a slick lobbying campaign or soup."

The Post obtained a document from the Salvation Army that details the group's political deal-making over the Bush faith-based initiative. In exchange for a "firm commitment" from the White House for greater freedom in discrimination against gays in employment, the religious group has promised to use its influence to garner support for the plan.

To that end, the Salvation Army has said it will spend in upwards of $110,000 per month in lobbying on behalf of the faith-based initiative.

The Salvation Army seemed eager to work with the White House in secret, as evidenced by the document's urging that efforts be made to "minimize the possibility of any 'leak' to the media."

Adding to the clandestine nature of the negotiations, the Post report noted that administration officials promised the Salvation Army that the group would be allowed to discriminate through changes made in federal regulations, instead of legislation. That route was preferable to the White House, since it would generate less attention.

The controversy further exhibits the critical question of employment discrimination in the White House faith-based initiative, and its legislative counterpart, the "Community Solutions Act" (H.R. 7). That proposal, introduced by Rep. J.C. Watts (R-Okla.), has come under fire for giving religious groups broad authority to engage in employment discrimination on the basis of religious teachings, even when the job is funded by tax dollars.

"I can't tell which is worse," Lynn concluded, "the White House's steadfast commitment to supporting discrimination, or the fact that the administration is trying to secretly negotiate with a religious denomination. Have they ever heard of the separation of church and state?"

Americans United is a religious liberty watchdog group based in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1947, the organization represents members, chapters and allied houses of worship in all 50 states.

Why don't the 'wingers admit what we already know: that "faith-based intiatives" are first, a boondoggle; second, an abdication of what should be strictly a governmental responsibility; third, potentially dangerous (cults like the Moonies can qualify, and probably already have), and last but definitely not least, they're PREJUDICED--heavily--in favor of only one religion, and that's Christianity. Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Pagans, etc.--all need not apply because Jim Towey, who's in charge, thinks they're not "loving people". He's actually said so on the White House website! How about that, eh??? blink.gif
