Holy crap, you guys. Wow. That's just awesome. I didn't even know such things existed. For those of you who weren't in on this, here's what I was sent:

HP P4 1.8GHz 384MB 40GB CDRW Mini-Desktop w/XP Pro - B

You guys are too cool. This is great!

I'm sorry this is so short, but I'm really speechless.

Anyone who was not a party of this project,
if you wanna help, it's still not to late!

Go to the POAC news page, (a link is provided in the upper left of this page)
Navigate to the store and buy a T shirt, or just donate 10 - 20 bux!

TJ, Sorry dude, but now you gotta learn XP!
Welcome to the latest Millennium!
MasterBen
You are most welcome, TJ!

If I guessed right, your current keyboard and mouse and monitor should just plug into it.
POAC
Sorry it's taken me so long to respond. It've been uber doober swamped today. I had to play catch-up and do orders and put out some software/security fires. I now have a few minutes before the guy from Raw Story calls. Or maybe I should say RAW STORY. =-)

Yep. I have all the hardware. It's a beautiful piece. I can't believe it's so small. Especially considering the power inside. It's a real beauty. I'm still crapping myself. I can't wait to get it set up and going. What a great surprise after the terribly demoralizing month I've had. So what made you guys conspire to do this?

I can't express how much it means to me. I really can't.
MasterBen
It was all Sky's idea... :-) I just underwrote the thing. (And picked it out.)

Well , I guess I'm glad that I refused the bribe to censor him.

Yes, seriously. Someone offered me 50 bucks a month to not let him post anything from the democratic party.

50 bucks. I'm not for sale, but if I was, I'd be a hell of a lot more expensive!

BTW, I'm such a nimwit. I thought i couldn't be in the POAC office since a call from RAW STORY was coming in. It is, but not now. Like 11 AM on THURSDAY! So here I was sitting like a dork, hovering over the phone.

Ben did you just try to call Mike Malloy?

I was thinking the same exact thing!

TJ,

Consider your the self the victim of a yet another senseless and random act of kindness!

Let it be known that several of the members who donated feel great that you are so pleased.
Let it also be known that there are many others who wanted to help, but are suffering financial hard times,
even so, they are just as pleased.

This is the kind of stuff that gives Turd Blossom night sweats!

By the way, would someone please clue me in about the Malloy joke?

Oh yeah! I almost forgot!
Fifty Bux a month??? Sheesh, I do get under some peoples skin!
Maybe he shoulda gone to the source and offered to buy me off?
(I'd have dickered him up to a hunnered)

Fifty bux a month? $600 a year! Wow!
I dunno, I think the random act was worth a lot more than that!

What goes around comes around, TJ, up to and including random acts of kindness...and I'm so glad you like the "kindness" that just came to your door! thumbup.gif tongue.gif

You guys beat me to the punch. I was gonna send him my Etch-A-Sketch. rolleyes.gif

That's a nice little unit and Ben found it at an Estore I use frequently because of their good prices and proximity, they're only 25 miles away from me so their orders get here fast.

The fact it has XP Pro on it makes it a really good deal, if you need to network other systems to it for printing, etc. It makes that a snap. XP Home can be balky in that way.

The other advice I have is with HP's, they seem to use weak power supplies. I've replaced more PSU's on HP's than any other make. If one day it won't turn on, chances are it's the PSU. Still, there are millions of HP's out there running just fine too so I wouldn't worry about it or anything. If it happens, I'll send you a new one with instructions how to install.

Secondly, a smaller case like that is subject to thermal challenges. Make sure you set it up where it will be coolest, no direct sunlight for instance and you should be OK.

Cooling is a major speed issue. You might consider running it with the cover off.
If there is room inside, you might add a couple cooling fans.
My current tower has 4. I added 3. 3 blow air in and 1 blows out.

The other thing that's important. Remove dust from the inside regularly!
That stuff really heats up (acts like a blanket holding heat in) and slows the machine down.
Gadzooks!
Maybe I should still send the Etch-A-Sketch...never had an overheating issue that I know of.

Much appreciated!

BTW, cooling on this unit will likely not really be an issue as the power supply is external...

Rather like the Apple Cube and the current iMac Mini.

Because you can run all of your Windows stuff on the Mac too!

I'm running a pc now, and waiting for the new Mac's with the intel chipsets...of course, it is rumored that there is a hack that allows Tiger to run on pc now.

Indeed there is!

I expect to see Apple cozy up to HP or Dell or Sony in the next few months and the destruction of Microsoft will be nearly complete. A Sony with a Mac OSX and a Windows compatibility layer based on WINE (suitably goosed by Apple's own engineers to work more reliably) would destroy the market for Windows-only PCs.
