Wed Aug 3, 1:39 PM ET

LONDON (AFP) - The amount of alcoholic drink bought by British households soared by nearly 10 percent in a single year, a report said. Britain's annual family food report produces a multitude of figures on the nation's food and drink buying habits.

The research, based on the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' expenditure and food survey, showed the average Briton aged over 13 eek.gif knocked back 0.97 of a litre of alcoholic drinks per week.

British residents on average each bring home 2.65 pounds (4.70 dollars) worth of booze per week. The survey was compiled using date from 16,965 people in 7,048 households across Britain

Oh my, so much ?

Drinking is a problem in the UK and in Ireland as well. They call it "the Irish Problem". Has something to do with lack of perspective & poverty.

1 litre a week at under $5.00? I've known some, back in the day before my ways were changed, who would do that much an hour. Wonder if the rise took place because they figured out that beer tastes better cold. Just a thought.

Cheers!
