I started my online presence in a visual chat environment called Palace. Nice place, palace... a network of smaller palaces, each comprised of many rooms, all interconnected by the same software.
The backgrounds could be any picture... yes... ANY picture as long as it was 512 x 384... our avatars could be anything we wanted, as long as they were no larger than 132 x 132.
We participants, or palacers as we were called, could move around on the backgrounds using our avatars and when we spoke... the text appeared beside us like comic book balloons...
One of the first things I noticed was that some of the people there thought their avatars represented them... WERE THEM, I mean... that they WERE their avatars... so... just to make sure that I did NOT fall into that same trap... I chose this smiley tiger...
I started dressing him shortly thereafter... it was fun... take the cowcub below, his right paw is comprised of 4 individually placed toes...
Palace is still around but is much less popular now than it was years ago...
Why yes, as a matter of fact I do still have mine... I have one visitor daily and we play Yahtsee... and talk about our cats, our new homes and of course... the weather...

may avatar will change with the weather. I've used a few pictures of Frank Zappa lately...I guess because I believe that if he were still alive, he would have some very profound things to say about all the shit that's going down in the USA. Frank was very political, all his life. I have the greatest respect for the man, more now than while he was still alive. It may also have something to do with me being exposed to Zappa's music at the tender age of 8. That was 1968. The lyrics always reached out and slapped my reasoning around. I never really liked the music until he finally took his fans advice and shut up and played his guitar. The man's music and image has been with me for a long long time. By using his face as an avatar, I'm paying tribute to him and what he stood for. I miss Frank and so do a lot of my friends and relatives. But stick around and you'll see me using a whole´lot of other avatars - cause I need change, constant change. I'd rearrange the living room four times a year if I could get away with it.

OK... So what's the story behind Seamus' crusty Marine General? It's Smedley Butler. He was an anti-Fascist activist in the 1930s.
Read his book:
War Is A Racket. He was a professional soldier and once he retired he commented on the hypocrisy of war. He helped foil a coup against FDR in 1934 that was backed by Corporate Interests. Does that sound familiar? These Corporate Clowns have been trying to hijack the government for generations. Smedley was a candidate for the Senate in 1932 as a Republican. Most folks consider General Butler a "borderline" socialist as he was an activist for anti-Fascist causes. Smedley Butler was a complicated and interesting historical figure. He saw Corporate America for what it was and is now. Perhaps that's why he's not all that well known. Funny though, there's a Marine Barracks name after him on Okinawa,
Camp Smedley D. Butler.
If I don't use General Butler as an avatar I usually use FDR.
I've recently used the blue jazz muppet. I was a professional musician when I was younger. When I got married I "settled" down to a career in the machine tool trades. I suppose that an avatar of a Toolmaker or a Modelmaker would go over most people's heads.

I watched the congressional hearings led by Tipper Gore to add content labeling on music CD's.
I watched with the attention due when both Zappa and John Denver sat side by side, on the SAME side of the issue. On the same side for opposite reasons!
He claimed labeling CD's was not needed and that parents should outta be aware what their kids buy. And Denver claimed that labeling CD's he'd never make any money cause all the kids would see is the "RATED G" label on his CD and never buy it!
I like Gore for his ecological stand and for the fact that in fact, he did help invent the internet. Had little respect for his wife though, after watching this on CSpan.

Years back I was shipping and receiving for a place that manufactured Printing Presses, and they had a complete shop for making parts. Absolutely fascinating machines. BillySHEARS
Saturday, 27 August 2005, 2:54 pm
I merged the the two, John Lennon & Billy Shears.

History:
#1 The more believable explanation is that Billy Shears is just the persona that
Ringo took for the mock band called Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
#2 This is the explanation used by Paul Is Dead believers. The supposed name of
the Paul-lookalike that took Paul's place after his "death" was William (Billy)
Campbell. What the Paul Is Dead believers believed that Billy Shears is a play on
the phrase "Billy's Here", meaning that William Campbell is here now and taking
the place of Paul.

#3 I think it's original. William = Will = Billy Shakespeare could = Shears.... It's a
very long shot, but Billy Shears = Will Shakespeare, would be a cool reference.

Not to mention, Lennon was very politically aware.

I created this avatar, because I am quite often called a smart ass.
To which I quite often reply with something like,
"If that's not OK lemme know, I'll go find you a dumb ass!"
I got myself a T shirt (At Wal*Mart) that is a picture of a donkey
and over that it says "I'm a smart one."
The avatar is a natural extension of all that.
And even though I might just piss you off with my arrogant insistance,
you most likely won't ever call me a dumb ass!

Totally a impulse decision:
I picked my name cuz one of the first threads I read in here was about wiretapping....and my husband & I have been radical long enough....lets say there were times when he lived in San Francisco the FBI prolly did go thru his garbage. And there have been times there were lots of weird clicks on our lines. (We got rid of the land line cuz of it) It just pisses me off. My first thought was, "I love this place, I'm gonna join and they can WIRE TAP THIS!"
So when it asked for a name...I just used it. I had no idea what "avatar" meant...then figured out it meant the little pictures. Our friends had given us that "Hippies use side door sign" cuz they always tease us about being old hippy peaceniks...LOL So, I grabbed the digital, ran outside, no makeup, first thing in the morning and snapped a pic of me leaning by it. Amazingly enough, at arms length, I got it all in the frame. Its a crappy picture of me; but its funny. I love humor. So at some point I'll probably get vain & throw on a better one. Or I wont. I'm not really here for asthetics....and if anyone makes up their mind on me from my pic, I prolly wouldn't mant to talk to them anyway. LMAO
As for the MILF thing....my sons babysitter told me a couple yrs ago what that means in her high school venacular. I thought it was hilarious. Figured at my age the only way somebody could call me a MILF was if I changed the definition. I'm just such a smart-ass at heart.
