Full Version: Elitism and gays.

I guess I'm elitist in my own way. Probably very few people are totally free of elitism.

But now and then I run into these gay males who really hate females. I mean they have nothing but scorn, contempt, and vitriol to contribute if the subject of females comes up.

It seems like there is nothing they are more passionate about, well, except for the subject of equal rights and tolerance for gays. If a bunch of us breeders were sitting around talking about gays the way they talk about females, they'd consider us the worst kind of bigots and hatemongers.

Am I the only one who sees a touch of hypocrisy there? rolleyes.gif

I posted the above in the wee hours after coming across an example of what I'd mentioned.

I woke up this morning realizing how unfair it was to single out gays. I've known Jews who were self-righteous about anti-Semitism, but themselves intolerant of African-Americans, I've known African-Americans who were concerned about racism, but overtly sexist themselves--I wonder if elitism is just a factor of considering yourself to be a member of a group.

Or maybe just a factor of considering yourself to "be" something, as opposed to considering yourself to just "happen to be" something as an accident of birth which could happen to anyone.

With ideologies it may be different. You can be born into a household with one ideology, and choose another for various reasons as you mature. But you really can't choose your sex, race, or some say, orientation.

Still, it always annoys me when groups that are subject to discrimination themselves, aren't tolerant towards other such groups.

Nope.

I see it too.

Let's kill the hypocrites.

It's tricky, isn't' it? Condemning hypocrisy can be in itself, paradoxically hypocritical.

Personally I think that a majority of hypocrisy comes from falling into the binary black and white thinking trap. There are no absolutes. Once you think there are, you run the chance of falling into a myriad of places that'll lead to hypocrisy.

Then again, this is only my opinion. What do I know? smile.gif

I think it has more to do with over-compensation, which can effect anyone or group.

Everyone has the right to complain about what ever, but when it becomes obviousely too much, one might wonder why?

I mean, in the same way a straight(?) man might complain just a bit too much about gays,
might gays also complain just a bit too much about straights, or women?

I think this is just evidence that there are 'hatemongers' and isolationists in every group of people. If it's any help, I definitely don't believe this is the norm. smile.gif There are also lesbians out there who hate men. But those, too, is far from the norm. I don't think there's a demographic out there that is totally free from this kind of thing. I've never understood "group hate" of any kind. I prefer to take people on an individual basis.....

I'm definitely guilty of that hypocrisy. I often see it as "us against them," when I'm not really sure who "we" are or who "they" are.

I think I'm one of "us" and I'm not one of "them," but that could just be a binary trap too.

That's deep, Sky. I think I'll be laughing about that one all day. Thanks. smile.gif

I suppose we're all guilty of those assumptions Folkie.

I think it helps when making a statement, to every now and then throw in things like;

"I think"
"In my opinion"
"It's my idea that"

This way when I say "we" I can hope it would be assumed I mean me,
and also anyone who might happen to agree.

"I can hope" see how that worked?

Absolutely, Pretzels. There's a "rugged individualist" over at TVNL who keeps ranting about groups. Seems to me you've got it nailed--the first thing anyone who calls themselves as individualist should do is take people as individuals. cool.gif

And I agree that what I've witnessed probably isn't the norm, but I'm with Sky--methinks sometimes some people doth protest just a bit too much. wink.gif

You don't need to change your brain/keyboard interface... I knew where you were coming from.

Thanks, Sky. I've quoted that line from Pogo many times, but I'd never seen the strip it came from before.

We are indeed poisoning ourselves with our own wastes--I still can't figure out why there are some species of "brainless" amoebae who are smarter than we are. It is a very humbling thing to know one is not a member of a viable species.

Whatever happened to, "Waste not, want not?"

Okay, the best I can do to get back on topic is pick a group to blame. I usually blame corporations for everything, but on this one it is lazy morons like me using paper plates when I don't feel like doing dishes. I'll try to mend my ways. smile.gif
