A full eighth of our population is in prison. For another eighth, live is so nasty, brutish, and short, that most don't live to be 20. A full half of our population is below average intelligence. That's why average is in the middle of the chart. Most of them think politics has nothing to do with them, and in any case, they are much too busy trying to earn a living or partying to waste time with anything that doesn't bring them an immediate reward.
About a third of the country votes. Among these, many vote however their leaders tell them to vote. They may feel dissatisfied with their choices, but those are the only choices they have, so that's who they vote for. They keep falling for the old canard that if they keep voting for whoever it is they usually vote for, things will get better, or at least won't get worse. Despite the fact that this has never been the case and never will, most people need something to believe in.
A very small number of U.S. citizens are intelligent, informed, and progressive. Many of these believe that they are the only one in that situation and have no contact at all with anyone similarly situated. Others have some contact with others, either through sites like this or through local progressive groups, but the moment they start to organize or become the least bit effective, they are mobbed by professional political operatives, or simply shut down. New laws with regard to the internet may soon mean that unless I subscribe to POAC's snailmail newsletter, I will not be able to access this site or anyone on it at all.
The best and the brightest have no chance whatsoever. The FBI is keeping close watch on environmentalists because they are considered terrorists under the Patriot Act. Anarchists are obviously a menace to society, and are constantly subject to brutality and arrest for such subversive acts as opposing war crimes. Vegetarians are a threat to the meat industry, and are likely to find themselves on FBI watch lists soon also.
This is a police state. If you are silent and obedient, your turn won't come until later. If you resist, you will be punished. But those who are silent and obedient don't know that this is a police state because they have never challenged it. They think the 1/8 of our population in prison must have done something wrong, like smoking pot (drugs account for 57% of our prison population) or being born brown or black. But prisons are a growth industry and to fuel stock market growth it needs to keep growing.
Those who thought that capitalism was a good thing, because even if they were working class, they could aspire to the American dream of owning their own home were taken aback by the recent Supreme Court ruling that if somebody with more money wants your home, it isn't yours any more. Normally they'd think that government taking their home was Communist, but since the people who did it are Republicans, most homeowners are still scratching their heads and trying to figure it out.
Not that it matters. If you read, "Votescam" by the late Collier brothers, you'll find that elections in this country have been rigged for a long time. It didn't start with Diebold. After the bloody coup of 1963, most people here said that since we didn't have bloody coups in this country, it must not have been a bloody coup, and anybody who said otherwise was a conspiracy theorist. After 9/11, most people said that since our government wouldn't pull a "Reichstag fire" the way the Northwoods report and PNAC suggested, it must have been somebody else, and anyone who says otherwise is a conspiracy theorist. Most people here went to lousy schools where they were not permitted to think for themselves. The ones who went to "good" schools, for the most part, are the children of the rich who were educated to be good corporate tyrants. And we have a higher rate of functional illiteracy than many 4th world countries.
Besides, fascism happens one step at a time, like boiling frogs. You have to be a student of it to recognize it in the early stages, and if you mention it to anyone else, you're obviously a paranoid nutcase. Everything's just fine--take your meds and try to have a more positive attitude.
When your government has an official policy of torture, it has a chilling effect on dissent. Remain silent and you're the "good German" who pretends not to know what's going on. Speak up and if they can't discredit you any other way, you'll soon find yourself in the gulag or the victim of an unfortunate "accident."
I don't see any hope for this country. I don't see any hope for our poor, ravaged planet. There was a lovely book a few years back called, "The Culture of Make Believe," by Derrick Jensen, who interviewed other activists who devoted their lives to hopeless causes. I sort of wish TJ would put it on his reading list. For me, it was inspirational. I came away from it feeling that even though it is hopeless, even though I'm crazy, and even though there is no possibility of my accomplishing anything whatsoever, so long as I keep doing whatever inconsequential things I can manage to do for progressive causes, I'm in excellent company. So that's my personal opium, what's yours?
