I'm working with a company to produce miscellaneous bumper stickers.
One of them, I stole the idea of course, they've given me a rough draft on before a friend of mine and I decide on which ones we want to order in bulk and get out to some stores on the ground.

One of the freeway bloggers did this...Ben has it on his White Rose page.

I liked it so much I decided it was a candidate for a sticker....I'm sick to death of seeing those goddamned yellow ribbons.

Questions:
1. Would you put it on your car?
2. Do you know others who would put it on their car?
3. Suggestions on design?
4. Any other thoughts?

it is a bit dark... i personally wouldn't want something with blood dripping on my car!

but i know quite a few folks who would- so i think it is a good idea-

any idea whose idea the overpass was?

Thanks for the input. I know it's a bit dark and both of my boys...20 and 17 thought it was really stupid. But they think I'M stupid. Hahahaha. They are embarrassed by me and my political statements yet they agree with me. Just not in public. I'm going to continue speaking out and too damned bad if "mommy" just embarrassed them.

We'll see how dumb they think I am when I rescue them from the draft. wink.gif
They are both politically aware, liberals, highly well informed, but extremely cynical. They don't believe that people will ever listen or change.
They sneer a lot. Hahaha. Spawn from hell.

Now, YOU have a clever child who actually creates something useful and has a sense of humor about it. Where the heck did I go wrong?

I don't know who the original freeway blogger is. I saw a thread last year with a whole bunch of freeway blogger signs and that was one of them.

Somebody else told me that it wouldn't work unless the person has the facts to back up the lying bit....well, I asked them if they believed there were WMDs and that Saddam had done the WTC. They said no they didn't. I said it was all they needed to know. They said Republicans have their own belief system.
One of my sons said they'll just say Bush was given faulty intelligence. BAM! That's the one they DO use.

So IRL the consensus is that they don't think it will do any good. Sheesh.

The folks in their early 20s (the friends of my son)....angry, cynical and they don't believe that the system or much of anything will work at all...the very group that will be drafted is a bit complacent. They're into angry music. They're trying to stay on the Dean's list and work their part-time job....and in my son's case, surf as often as possible.
This is the same son who went to SF for a huge protest against the Iraq invasion with a group of his HS friends and was mortified to find out that I and my friends were on the same bus. hahaha. I had to pretend I didn't know them....they were in the back I was up front. Sheer coincidence we were on the same bus.

Yet, now he says this sticker is not effective and won't change any minds. He has a point. Disheartening, eh?
Catherine
Panda...do you think it would be more attractive to people who oppose Bush policies if it did not have the blood drops at all or perhaps minimized? It's a great idea, and I'm of the opinion that most folks would be attracted by the words, but perhaps repulsed by the blood suggestion.

They're not unaware of the cost of Bush's lies, so the emphasis should be on WHO CAUSED the problems in the first place...and it wasn't Saddam Hussein.

My 2 cents worth!

You may already know of this site, but just in case you don't, here it is:

i have a son, too- my oldest- and he is much more like yours. it ain't cool to be a politically outspoken BOY... they are too busy criticizing everything that doesn't matter- LOL for example, i can't watch a movie with my son anymore- he talks all the way through it or snorts or laughs- 'yeah, right- that transfer truck could keep up with a ferrari' - you get the idea-

i think it is a guy thing - but don't worry- they do believe- they just can't believe in mama openly right now! LOL

boys fake apathy- they feel weak if they express emotion- so sad that our culture does this to boys- i'm assuming it is the culture or biology- i damn sure didn't do it!!! i love to run him down and give him a big ole smooch ('ughhh, mama, STOP') or call him on the phone when he's at work and tell him 'i love you, baby!' because he won't say anything back ('okay. bye')

boys.

as far as a sticker changing minds- i don't think that is the point of stickers, anyway! they are too short to teach-

BUT i think those who are silent and feel alone
are EMBOLDENED (is that a word?) by seeing similar views- bumper stickers do elicit an emotional response- and that is GOOD.

i think your bumper sticker is good. the only problem i really see with it at all is that those who (like me) have relatives over in iraq might have a bit of a visceral response to seeing blood on a yellow ribbon... it hurts a bit and seems a little cruel-

but i think it will do well-

-t-
tamara
btw...

i don't mean to say you should take the blood off the ribbon- it would take away from the strength of its message-

just saying to be prepared for the response from those who are most afraid of losing someone over there...

It's nice, but I think the one on the over pass, and I think it's no accident, the yellow ribbon seems to have bloody blown off legs!
I might even super impose a drawing of a soldier with the ribbon.

A Yellow ribbon that is a war casualty.

and as much as I'd love to see bloody stump yellow robbons to remind people that supporting the troops means taking care of the troops and families after they return, I'd be afraid some winger whose had a beer or 5 and owns a baseball bat might take offense at my message and make my truck pay for being driven by such a (gasp) liberal!

Thanks for the input folks, excellent points.
Yes, it's inflammatory. I would think twice myself about placing it on my car.
I have a few veteran friends who would have no such fears....if they were in Vietnam they have so much more credibility.

Rex your stickers are really good. I especially like the first one.

Sky, I too think that's what the freeway blogger meant with the blood.
Amputated legs. Gruesome. Perhaps only effective as a freeway sign.
To be removed but the impact is felt and mission accomplished.

Catherine, yes...that occurred to me too. Just make it smaller and leave off the blood. This particular company is small and only does 3x11...I would have preferred the same size as the actual yellow ribbon magnets. But now we're looking at a much more expensive design with cutouts etc.
And YES...that's where I saw the blogger signs. Thanks.

I think this one can go on the back burner for a bit.
We need to think about it for a while.
I certainly wouldn't want to offend any service people who have been to war.
It's dangerous territory. I don't know that I want to incite wars on the southern CA freeways. It's bad enough out there. The friend who's doing this with me is in MD and we figured we'd try them out in an eastern and western market. I think you all have valid points and I'll share them with him.

And after I'd sent that in....I saw this....I think it's better on a few levels...not as shocking..not quite as offensive.

And Tamara....that's IT....they're boys...and yes, society does this to males. It's not fair at all. They sure didn't learn this from me. But the pressure to look and act "like a man" must be huge. The scornful act is just that; an act. They must be tough guys now. You have both so you can compare. I only see these big boys, taller than me and hairy and with deep voices...but they're still babies in many ways. You know how it is. Parenthood is for ever. I think it's harder to be a kid now than it ever was. Constant sensory overload and input from the media on how to be, how to act....what's cool and what's not.
They will only hug me back if nobody else can see...including each other. And I can say I love you but they'll only reciprocate in private too. Silly boys. I get "unh, whatever, bye" on the phone. Hahaha.

Seamus
Panda,

I'll have to go with the yellow bloody one as a bit too dark for my tastes. I have a 10 and a 6 year old. They might get a little creeped out by it.

I can see Sky's point as well. I live in a very Republican County and the likelihood of some beer addled jamoke trashing my car is pretty high. My "Embrace Martial Law, Vote Republican" raised more than a few eyebrows.

This One I Like!

It's not too subtle and not too brash. I think that it's a keeper.

But I can see the visual point of the missing "Ribbon Limbs"

How about, "How many lives? How many limbs? Is it worth it for a lie?" It's not too long and it has a bit of a cadence to it. Whattya think?

Well, bloody hell! See? Two more views.
A vet says yes. And another no. Maybe I should go ahead and have them made up and see who dares to put them on their vehicles. A small batch.

I'm a hypocrite because I can't be sure I'd put that on the car unless I was REALLY feeling brave and angry at the same time.
I'm one of only three Dems in my entire neighborhood. The ONLY yard sign for Kerry was here. I had to go several streets over to find another...and they were already friends. Next door they chant and have Christian sing-alongs...guitars and amps the whole nine yards. Across the street they think I'm a devil worshiper. blink.gif The night Benedict-Hitler the 420th was announced as Pope they had a PARTY to celebrate! Woohooo...sodas and everything! Nice gentle music. (Vomit)
And this is a Blue town...is Ghod testing me?

So, the reservations I'm hearing are my own too.
I saw three cars today flying the flag on white plastic sticks on the passenger side window..flapping in the breeze. THREE. I also saw one old Kerry/Edwards sticker. I KNOW they don't outnumber us.

Doc, yer a brave guy! biggrin.gif

Hahaha Seamus, that's great..."Embrace Martial Law, Vote Republican" and you lived to tell the tale!! I currently have two on the car..."I (heart)America" and below it

I like the idea of choice.

Sign on my house says,
"Beware of Attack Democrat"

Sign in the window reads,
Lobotomies for Republicans: It's the Law

Because I am surrounded by old people on limited fixed incomes,
I am well received here at home!

Here's my 2 cents worth. I personally think that the sticker would be too inflammatory. In my opinion, it would further perpetuate the mistaken belief that Conservatives have that most Liberals are nothing more than bug-eyed, veins popping out, screaming in your face zealots. The sticker would piss off a hell of a lot of people who believe in the whole yellow ribbon concept. Basically, it would alienate many more people than it would win over. You will catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. Just my opinion.

I like the black ribbon, Panda...it's a "keeper," as Seamus said. I'll put one on my car, and damn the torpedoes. I've got vandalism insurance. Let me know how to get one asap.

Scroll down to the PLUG forum and look at the post by a newbie named 7blades. His "Fristian" bumper sticker is great. This fellow is one to have on our side when it comes to hitting the Bush wingnuts. He was one of our team at the old Music Row Democrats forum when we were fighting off the PWIC invasion.
