Despite campaigning on the slogan "America and the world are safer" George W. Bush and his Department of Homeland security are reportedly calling for unprecedented security for the presidential inauguration in January.

The Washington Post is reporting that thousands of police offices will be called in from around the nation along with a military protective force of possibly up to 4,000 soldiers.
It is possible that the president and his advisors are concerned of an attack by al Qaeda considering that we now know that Osama bin Laden is alive and well somewhere in the world. Bin Laden, despite Bush's promise to America to capture him "dead or alive" presented a video days before the election that proved that the world's top terrorist was in seemingly good health.

It is more likely that Bush is concerned over protesters that may be present within the parade route in January. In 2001, Bush was embarrassed by vocal protesters which cause his motorcade to rush down Pennsylvania Avenue. Police dragged away many of the protesters while the presidential limousine was pinged by eggs and a surging crowd frightened Secret Service officers.

While claiming to have been reelected with a national mandate, the reality is that half of America does not support George W. Bush or his reelection. As was common on the campaign trail, inauguration day will most likely be a planned Bush rally at the expense of the time and energy of America's security personnel.

Wow, when conservatives say they want to turn the clock back, they really mean it. Will he return the National Guard to its former duties of shoving guns in the backs of union-members so they'll shut up and work or what? It seems to follow the same pattern. barf.gif

So, the gov't is telling us how safe everything is (not that i count on the gov't to keep me safe), and yet the president is requiring this unpresidented security. hmmm....
I think it is the american people they are worried about, not obl/terrorists.
F9/11 was the first time i saw the 2001 inauguaration (i don't watch tv much and i sure didn't tune in for that) and i was really amazed.
I think there might be a small part of me that feels almost sorry for bush...i think he is the most disliked and mistrusted president ever (but hey, he deserves it).

I hope more people show up there to protest his inaguration than we had protesting the war.
