The Discovery Channel showed "Supervolcano" last night. The three hour movie was about the possibility of Yellowstone erupting as a super volcano. Tom Brokow's commentary at the end of the show was another positive factor of this scary production.

I was wondering...did any other POAC members see it? If so, what did you think of it?

I don't know, Doc...there was an encore presentation right after Tom Brokow's comments. Have you checked the Discovery Channel's lineup for the next several weeks?

You know what really bothered me as I watched this? The fact that, if a national disaster of this magnitude should happen while the Bushies are in power, the self-serving bastards Bush has appointed to FEMA would be without a clue as to how to react. Bush himself, along with the members of his cabinet, would vanish to their underground bunkers to wait out the disaster...like Hitler and his cronies did before the Russians got to Berlin.

We'd be at the mercy of Mother Nature running rampant because we have an idiot for a leader and his toadies aren't much better.

Okay, here's my take on that whole "docudrama" Volcano thing.

One caveat: I didn't see it. Second caveat: I considered minoring in geology in College; I have a few courses in it. It's a hobby sort of. I'm no professional, but I'm no rube either.

Without seeing it my gut feeling is that I suspect this is just another "let's put some fear in them" background noise. rolleyes.gif

Perhaps my disdain for the mass media infotainment complex is jading my opinion.

Call me a cynic. blink.gif

Mayhaps I'll check it out on DVD when the hype subsides.

i don't like those shows.. they freak me out

i did see a discovery channel thing about a super tsunami though....

Typical mockumentary, rather than spend more time on the science they waste 2 hours on BS fiction and 20 minutes on the science.....typical

hmm.. the super tsunami thing i saw was actually very interesting... most of it was about past events and what caused them.. for example a huge tsunami in alaska was caused by a land slide falling into the water.... if i remember correctly they said it was the largest tsunami ever recorded ... and trees close to the top of the mountains still haven't recovered

1958 Lituya Bay Tsunami

QUOTE
Lituya Bay, located within Glacier Bay National Park, along Alaska's southeastern coast (see map above), was the site of one of the largest local tsunamis ever recorded. On the night of July 7, 1958, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake occurred along the Fairweather Fault, the trace of which runs along the far northwestern portion of the bay. The epicenter of this quake was a scant 13 miles from Lityua Bay. The earthquake caused a large landslide in the bay, which produced a local tsunami of frightening size

i did whatch it (wifey made me) and i felt it to be a government conditioning and fearmongering tool. total propaganda, nothing more. It was worse than any of the hollywood end of the world type movies put out.

i really liked how homeland security and fema were all in one... the offices had giant hameland security and fema logos right next to one another on the wall in the "war room"... they would just keep showing it. total conditioning and brainwashing. also they are here to help... yet they lied and lied and lied and let like 25 million americans die... sick stuff man.

its to get you used to seeing these types of things and you wont think twice once you are in a situation like that.

Remember the good guys torture on all the cop shows... "the good guys"
so it must be ok to torture right? its all to get you used to it. desensitize you and condition you.

just one mans oppinion.

I saw the show, and I enjoyed it as I believe it was intended.
It was a drama based on extreme possibility with the intention mainly to entertain and secondly to educate.

Lets put this thing into some perspective!!!!

Most of us drive every day and never give it much thought. Yet that one act puts us at very serious and very real risk of death and injury. In fact, thousands die every year in OTR transportation. Yet, it took years for the Govt and the insurance industry to convince us to wear seatbelts! (many of us still don't)

Yes, the yellowstone caldera could again erupt massivly, anytime from tomorrow to 10,000 years from now, and maybe never! There are several other caldera's that are still active. Not as big as Yellowstone, but big enough. There are also asteroids, and massive Tsunami's triggered by both earthquake and earth slide activity. There's global warming!

My point simply is this....
Be aware, but don't let entertainment hype in the name of drama confuse your priorities. This show was no conspiracy. It's purpose was to make money for TDC by entertaining and scaring the viewers. And that's all.

Enjoy the show for it's entertainment value and when they get to "the facts" remember that though they are indeed facts, there is a grain of salt to be eaten with that education meal.

The prez was referred to as "SHE." The Homeland Security secretary used that pronoun when he said the president had left for a bunker in Florida. ohmy.gif biggrin.gif

Missed it. Monday night is "24" night, and I was watching Kiefer Sutherland chasing the presidential "football" (the briefcase with all the nuclear codes and stuff) after Air Force I went down.

Since I can't do a damned thing about the Yellowstone caldera possibly blowing up, I'll just stick to worrying about day-to-day stuff.

I should think the day to day is scary enough!!!!

What the Yellowstone story is and should be, is fascinating geology!
I live on the Columbia river, just west of the Columbia Gorge.
A large and beautiful place created by an event called,
"The Baritz Floods". (Or Missoula floods)
One of the largest floods ever on earth.

My favorite walk is a trail that follows LaCamas creek. This small canyon is also a direct result of these floods.
The effects are all over, and I find it fascinating!
As is geology in general, and astronomy, and meterology, and history, and on and on and on......

BTW
See that line on the far left in the image?
At the time of the floods, That was the coast line!

I saw it last week. I wasn't impressed but they did do a pretty good job of it, at least the part I saw before I fell asleep. If I'm not mistaken, the film was made by PRO7 and BBC ?? If this is this case, I seriously doubt the film is a propagandistic scare tactic of any kind. It's probably meant to bring some hard to swallow facts to our attention. See Pompeii - Vesuv for example. On the whole, we're pretty naiive about what all could happen to us at any given moment. C'est la Vi

I saw it... I was so impressed by it that I fell asleep before the ending... then caught the encore to catch the ending and alas, fell asleep again... Can anyone tell me what happened?
