Full Version: McCain's Complete Desperation
OLD American Century / White Rose Society message boards > Political Discussion forums > 2008 Candidates
Jack
When i first heard that McCain chose Palin as he running mate, i initially thought "he is just trying to win over clinton supporters." However, over the last 24 hours, it has dawned on me just how desperate this choice actually is. As i said yesterday, people in the media seemed to be in the frame of mind that on the surface this is such a terrible choice that McCain must have some kind of brilliant plan to go along with this because no one would ever be that stupid.

I didn't buy into that but instead thought it was a really one dimensional, win over clinton supporters pick. While that may be part of it, i am beginning to realize just how bad McCain's chances of winning actually are and what this pick actually means. Think about the implications of this. Since late June, McCain's strategy had been all about attacking Obama. First on his supposed lack of experience then later on they added the "celebrity" and "elitist" arguments. From what i have heard, they were planning on continuing with this line of attack into election day. In fact the entire republican convention was supposed to be about (this is confirmed mind you) how obama is dangerously under-qualified.

However, McCain began to realize that the attacks weren't working, so he abandoned his entire strategy, eight weeks before the election, and decided to bank his entire campaign on hoping that people fall in love with Sarah Palin and enough people will vote for McCain to get her into office. If you actually sit back for a second and really reflect on that. His entire strategy for winning the election is to hope people forget about the crumbling economy, the war, the bush administration's corruption and incompetence, rising energy costs, inflation, exploding deficits, just forget the entire disaster that has been the last eight years and instead people will be like "oh she is a mom of 5, how wonderful. She would make a great VP."

Really think about this in the long term, not just what it will do to the polls in the next three days (so far appears to be little) you will probably get to the point where you just say "holy sh*t, this is bad". That is the conclusion that many republican strategists not linked to mccain's campaign have been saying.

In a few days, once the media stops busting its nut over this, it is going to quickly sink in just how bad McCain's situation is. I'm not even sure if calling this a "hail mary pass" describes how desperate this actually is.

I have gone from laughing to stunned in the last 24 hours. Remember when i used to talk about McCain eventually imploding or melting down, well i think we are finally there.

I fully agree with you jack.
McCain threw a hail mary pass that fell way short. Over the course of the next week we will see it replayed over and over again, by the GOP them selves.

By this time next week I think it will be quite clear how insane his pick was, and and how screwed his campaign really is.

Even Mitt Romney has made statement saying how terrible McCains pick is.

Yeah and there is a reason why presidential candidates don't typically make "out of the blue" or novelty picks with no substance. Because they don't work! There have been instances in the past where candidates have tried and it has destroyed them (or nearly did like in 1988).

two things to consider....

1] McCain did not vette Palin
2] How cute will she be in a debate with Biden?

What i am worried about is that the expectations for her will be so low that also as she doesn't sh*t herself on stage, everyone will say "she went toe to toe with biden and held her own!" "Remember when she said 'they hate us for our freedom' and 'the surge is working'? Brilliant!"

And yes, i realize this is one of the most vile things i have ever posted on this board but i had a point to make and damn it i was going to make it!

Like a truck debating with a puppy.

I am waiting for a 1988-esque moment: "Governor, I know Hillary Clinton. I've served with Hillary Clinton. Governor, you are no Hillary Clinton."
