Record 38 million viewers watched Obama's speech
RAW STORY
Published: Friday August 29, 2008

38 million tuned into watch Senator Barack Obama accept the Democratic presidential nomination, according to Nielsen Media Research.

"Mr. Obama’s speech — a historic one given his status as the first African American nominee of a major political party — reached significantly more viewers than the comparable addresses in 2004," The New York Times reports. "Coverage of John Kerry’s acceptance speech in 2004 had 24.4 million viewers; coverage of George W. Bush’s convention speech that same year drew 27.5 million."

As over 84,000 filled Mile High Stadium to hear Obama in person, according to Nielsen Media Research, the televised broadcasts attracted more viewers than the Olympics opening ceremony in Beijing, the final 'American Idol' or the Academy Awards this year.

The Times also notes that "the four-night Democratic convention ranks as the most-watched convention of either party, Democratic or Republican, since Nielsen began measuring conventions in 1960."

"Obama's audience might be higher, since Nielsen didn't have an estimate for how many people watched Obama on PBS or C-SPAN Thursday night," the Associated Press adds.

Nielsen data is so skewed and out of touch it was probably way MORE than that which is a great sign. I have never known anyone that is or ever has been a Nielsen household. I watched most of my convention coverage on PBS HD.

My neighbor had to watch all the speeches online due to working 2nd shift hours this week, and Nielsen never accounts for people like that as well. I read that McCain was having trouble filling the Excel Center in Minnesota.

I truly have a hard time with these polls showing this election that close. I just don't see it that way, but then again I am wearing blue tinted glasses. Since I am in a border town in southwest Illinois, I spend a lot of time in Missouri and I have seen far more Obama stickers and signs in Missouri than McCain's. I will have to count them sometime.

Tomorrow, I will be heading to my alma mater's game in St. Louis to watch Illinois beat Missouri. Looks like moveon is having a voter registration there at 3:30. Very cool.

Can I ramble any more off topic? I don't think so.

Good ramble. Don't be shy about doing it again.

Perhaps after the game tomorrow night! Since I will be attending an all you can eat, and drink, tailgate.....I'm sure I will be rambling a lot!
