I'm trying very hard to understand the selection of this woman as McCain's VP. Did he not want to be president?!? In selecting her, McCain eliminated his ability to use against Obama the one and only arrow in his quiver that could hit a mark, experience; McCain's ticket is now as vulnerable to this tactic as are the Democrats. He's insulted Hilary voters who are asking if McCain thought that all that was needed to woo them was a couple of breasts and a uteris, and alienated the traditional family values voters who are looking at Palin's very young children and asking where lie their mother's priorities.

When I first read that Palin had been tapped I admit, I thought it was a hoax.

Obama made 'judegement' the new buzzword for the election, and McCain just demonstrated that it is something he lacks. CNN's comments pages held one message from a (supposedly) Republican respondent who said that Obama, in selecting Biden, looked at what America needed, while McCain only pandered to what he thought might appeal to a fraction of the demographic in an effort to get elected. For him, that made McCain's judegement not just questionable, but non-existent. Under the cirucumstances, who could but agree?!?

I never thought he was going to pick a woman because of a poll i saw only a few weeks ago. Back then there was a lot of buzz around mccain choosing a woman, so i believe NBC conducted a poll trying to figure out what would happen. I can't find that poll anymore but what it basically said was McCain's support among women would increase slightly, from like 40-43% but his support among men would take like a 15 or 20 point hit.

I thought that poll would have convinced him to steer clear of picking a female VP because lets face it, the republican party is dominated by men and pretty intolerant men at that. I think what we are going to see, once the shock and disbelief of this pick wears off is a huge hit in McCain's poll numbers. Not only did he pick a woman is a party that isn't big on women in seats of power but he chose one with nearly no experience and no knowledge of foreign policy, the only issue republicans care about. He may win over some of those clinton supporters who are still pouting but he will likely turn off a greater number of people, in the long run.

And just a quick note on all of those clinton supporters who supposedly support mccain. I think a lot of people forget just how many republicans crossed over to support clinton as a way to prolong the democratic race. We see polls saying "this is the percentage of people who voted for clinton in the primaries who support mccain." Any of those republicans with their "operation chaos" qualify in that statement and i am guess that is where a good portion of mccain's support among clinton voters is actually coming from.

Yep, I was thinking the same thing. Rural, "guns and God", backwoods country types weren't going to vote for Obama anyways but did McCain just lose some of those votes with this selection. I know Palin is a "card-carrying NRA" member and pro hunting fishing, etc......BUT she is still a woman!!!!!!! Now, this doesn't mean anything to me, but there are still a TON of bigots out there that probably seethe at the idea of a black man or ANY woman in the White House.

Hmmm, I think all it really means is that support from women in the Democratic power structure will be all that much more important from Obama. It is just slightly more crucial now that we get people like Clinton, Pelosi, McCaskill, etc to be out there telling voters, "it is Obama who represents women's interests, not McCain." Not that I think it will be a tough sell, and what this tells me is that the McCain camp is getting desperate and grasping at straws. He is taking a profound risk with his more conservative base for probably not that much extra reward, because honestly there were not a lot of Hillary voters who voted for her simply because she was a woman, and it would be insulting to suggest so. Of course, true to GOP form, that is likely what they think.

Overall, I actually think this will be a positive move in the long run, because it puts women's interests and women's votes on the line like never before. Now, Obama is basically forced to cast himself as pro-woman (which he is, much more so than this Sarah Palin on every issue that matters to a majority of women). For McCain, this has "backfire" written all over it.

I think McCain realizes he's lost this campaign, and just threw a hail mary pass.

Long time no see there Kelly.
I hope all is well!

On MSNBC, Rachel Maddow was just talking to Keith O. Apparently, Sarah Palin called Hillary Clinton a whiner back in March. If that is true, I am sure that will go over well with Hillary supporters.

Also it appears that Palin flip flopped on the Bridge to Nowhere. Could that backfire?

Sounds like the Romney and Pawlenty camps aren't too happy either.

This is going to get interesting!

blink.gif I think McCain picked this woman because she was a woman, attractive, bright, a republican woman would would pass all the litmus tests to be considered a real Conservative by their base!!! McCain, however has not considered how the nomination of Ms. Palain will be viewed by the majority of the independents out in America, who I think will think of this as an attempt by McCain to pull the middle-aged women's vote away from Barack to his side after Hillary's not getting the VP spot!

McCain is no fan of women, nor is the Republican base, they might as well have as part of their slogan, "Keep'em barefoot and pregnant and out of the workplace."! This is going to backfire on him I think in the long run for the next 66 days until elections.
