Beck: ‘We Shouldn’t Spend A Single Dime’ On New Orleans, Residents Should Just ‘Move Out’
Last night on his CNN program, Glenn Beck, talking with former Cheney adviser Mary Matalin, noted the possibility of a hurricane hitting New Orleans on “day one of the Republican convention” next week. But Beck then expressed his displeasure that tax money is being spent in New Orleans and offered a simple solution to residents not wishing to experience another Katrina-like disaster: “Move” :

BECK: Why are we spending all this money in New Orleans? We shouldn’t spend a single dime of taxpayers’ money in a place where — I don’t care where it is — where it is in a flood zone. Move out of the place that, you know, you’re below sea level.

Watch it:

Of course, the New Orleans area is not the only flood zone in the United States that receives federal tax dollars. Areas of Minnesota, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Texas, Missouri and numerous other American states are now considered flood zones. Does Beck expect these residents to pick up and move as well? If so, where to?

Meanwhile in New Orleans, residents are preparing for Hurricane Gustav, which is barreling toward the Gulf Coast. The storm is expected to reach New Orleans on Monday, the same day President Bush is scheduled to speak at the Republican National Convention and just in time for the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal ® has said he will skip the convention if the storm continues to move toward his state. However, as of yet, the White House has not said whether President Bush intends to risk a repeat of 2005.

Gee, you know, he's right. I don't want my tax dollars going to pay for water to go out to the people who live in the desert. Why should LA, Phoenix, and Las Vegas benefit from water? They chose to live in the desert! And I don't want my tax dollars going to repair highways in the mountains either. Why should we help them? They chose to live in the Rockies! And I don't want my tax dollars going to send electricity out to the countryside either! If those country bumpkins want electricity, they should move to the cities like everyone else! Yeah, damn right, everyone for himself!

[/sarcasm]

This reminds me a lot of what Naomi Klein talks about in her latest book about "global Green Zones" where the haves can live in luxury, while the vast have-nots of humanity must scrape together a life in the red zones that would not exist without the explicit construction of the haves.

I don't want my tax dollars going to pay for freeing Iraqis from a dictator, insurgents, terrorists, or whatever we are calling them today. If you don't want to live under a dictator, get your arse up and leave.

In fact I don't want any of my tax dollars to keep another 9-11 from happening. If you work in a skyscraper, you know it's a potential terrorist target, you should quit your job and leave.

I live in Southern Indiana, people who live here and want to commute to Louisville for work are trying to get more bridges built. I don't want my tax money going to that. If you want to work on the other side of the river, you should move over there. Why should I foot the bill for your poor planning and lack of foresight?

When I was living in Louisville, there were people trying to get the city to build a stadium for a professional sports team that doesn't exist. I don't want my tax dollars going for that. If there is adequate interest in building a stadium, let the people who have a use for it figure out how to pay for it. (this one I actually believe, but I bet Beck would disagree)

What the hell do people think America is? Some sort of team? Do we have some sort of arrangement where we all pull together for the good of greater society? That smacks of Communism.

Our rich white male forefathers fought to build this country so they could protect every last cent of their money. That point is not open for debate.

Why should the fortunate have to inconvenience themselves in any way? If the poor people at the unfortunate end of the spectrum don't like their lot in life, they should just get off their asses and get their dad to pull some strings to get them into Yale like GWB did. That's the key to the American dream.

dry.gif I wonder how much Tax money was spent on Glenn Beck getting Sober and helping him out of his addictions? I wonder how much money is funneled to work projects that are of keen interest to the Morman Chuch in Utah? I sure don't want to see my tax dollars helping the break away LDS group in Southern Utah fund food stamps and welfare to help the builders of those homes for all their wives and children to live off the state dole!!!

Thank you for pointing out they are a break away group, I get tired of telling people that.

Glenn Beck does not represent the LDS church in any way. The Church has a standing policy of not endorsing any party or platform which they rarely deviate from.
