Lieberman reportedly on McCain’s VP ‘short-list.’
8.9.8
The Financial Times reports that Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) campaign is vetting Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) as a potential vice presidential running mate. One adviser said, “[McCain] loves Lieberman. And he is on the [short-]list because Lieberman has never embarrassed anyone, never misspoken. The first rule is, don’t take someone who costs you votes.” The adviser also added, however, that many conservatives “would be pissed as hell.” Lieberman will also likely attend the GOP convention and may be speaking there.

Y'know, maybe Lieberman's been a Trojan horse all along, aiming to take down the Republicans from the inside...

... nah.

never gonna happen. McCain can't insult that many repubes and expect to get away with it. Letting this leak is a scheme to show how "bi-partisan" and mavericky he is.

"Honest" Joe and "Lucky" McSame, drawn together by destiny (and the same handlers..) in an attempt to thwart sanity, reason and democracy. Boldly tripping over the Doorstep of Democracy and tumbling base-over-apex down the Stairs of Stupidity to crumple into a heap on the Path of Perdition.

Not even topless biker chicks and whatever creature blows "Smirkin' Joe's whistle could get our two feeble old men on the Road to Reichtousness again, although Viagra (official McCain Campaign sponsor "Creating Outstanding Presidents On Unusually Tight Salaries" COPOUTS...) will surely make an effort, especially with Joe, who looks like he hasn't had any (common sense, hey, whaddaya think I'm talking about ??...) since he came out of the Democrat closet as a thrusting neodem..

The scriptwriters of 'Dallas' must be wishing they'd written something like this...Larry Hagman as McSame. If he's still alive. They must be about the same age...
I fancy Jack Nicholson for playing "Sneaky" Joe Lieberman, after his awesome role as "The Joker" in 'Batman'. That crazed expression, wild eyes, neocon smirk and demented laugh, and the complete disconnection from reality, as well as the obvious attraction for the side of evil and diabolical treachery...

If McCain selects Lieberman as his VP, it will be bad news.

Any rational person would agree that over the last 30 years, the country has taken a sharp turn to the right.

15 years ago we had the Clintons working for a single payer nationalized health care system. In the Democratic primaries this year, neither of the top contenders' plan looked anything like that. Their solutions were both much more like what a Republican would propose as a solution to a health care crisis if they would admit there was such a crisis. Tax breaks to help people pay for private insurance? There is nothing left about that.

Meanwhile the Republicans have nearly moved the public debate to whether access to Doctors should even be a right, regardless of who pays for it. Kicking undocumented immigrants out of emergency rooms? Are they serious?

Corporate tax rates have plummeted at the peril of our public schools and infrastructure.

Unions that once protected the rights of the worker from big business now resemble the big businesses they once kept in check.

Dick Cheney's 1% doctrine.

All signs of how far right the country has drifted. All of these things are just accepted by most of the people and most of the MSM.

At the same time, the Republican spin machine likes to blame all of their failings on the Democrats. They claim that the Democratic party has dragged the country to where we are on the verge of turning into a twisted, even more leftist version of the Soviet Union.

Any problem in the health care system is because thanks to Democrats, emergency rooms can't turn away those without the ability to pay.

Good American jobs are going overseas because the socialists in unions cut the profit margin too thin to make a go of it with products made by US workers.

For 4 years, they railed on about how we were losing the War on Terror because the lefties wouldn't allow them to go all in. The Commies in the Democratic party were stopping them from killing all the Muslims indiscriminately.

So that's where Lieberman comes in. To the Republican machine, he is the perfect Democrat. They may disagree with him on a few social issues, but he is willing to toe the Republican agenda on what matters to them - War and Imperialism.

They could care less about his stance on abortion or gay marriage. Those are just wedge issues anyway, if somehow those issues were influenced by a Lieberman VP selection it would just firm up the Republican base of fundamentalists and homophobes AGAINST Democrats in the future.

To the Republicans, Lieberman is proof of the country's veers to the left. They blame his friction with the rest of the Democratic party on Lieberman's unwavering commitment to the American cause and his unwillingness to compromise his principles to follow this faggy fad the rest of the country is following to the left. Lieberman isn't creeping to the right, the rest of the Democrats are creeping left away from Lieberman.

They'd like to see Lieberman lead some sort of old school Democratic revival (in their minds not in reality) so that the Democratic party will move to the right and be what the Republican party was 30 years ago ideologically, thus clearing the way for the Republican party move even further to the crazy authoritarian right without anyone really noticing. They'd still just be slightly right of the Democrats right?

I think if McCain picks Lieberman, it will restore his image as a maverick in the MSM and to those not paying much attention to the contest. They'll hail it as a brilliant move to reunite the country. They'll focus on the few areas of disagreement and hail the dawning of a new day of unity and getting past petty disagreements for the good of the country.

Freepers and Neocon talk radio will feign outrage for a few days. Then when they see the good press he starts getting, when they realize that it won't change McCain anti-abortion/ anti-gay-marriage stance and most importantly that they won't have to give up on their dreams of nuking Iran and permanent occupation of Iraq, they'll be OK with the choice.

Alas, I fear if this VP Lieberman thing happens, it will be bad news for Obama and progressives.

I also fear that if he announces this decision before Obama announces his VP pick, it will force Obama to pick a rightwinger as his VP pick and we'll be stuck with a choice between two Neocons or a shaky knee fledgling president and a stong willed Neocon pulling the strings.

I hope camp McCain blows this chance just like they've blown everything else thus far.
