QUOTE
Barack Obama's policy positions, core beliefs and campaign promises are similar to the weather, particularly the rain storms in Southern Utah. Wait a few minutes, and it'll change.
"Home prices are going to fall further in months to come." Our close neighbors in Las Vegas had declines of 26.8 percent, and more to come, in their housing market. St. George is not exempt from this decline in home prices. This got me to thinking about our tax assessments here in Washington County. If home prices (property taxes) are going down, then so should our taxes. The county had no problem raising or taxes when prices shot up. So what do you think, folks, will our taxes go down? I'm going to hold my breath.
Regarding "We haven't learned from the past": This is right on about energy, nuclear, "no," drilling for new oil, "no," drilling for new natural gas, "no," import same, "yes." As long as our political representatives are stuck on this broken record produced by the greenies' record company, nothing will change. OK, folks, are you mad enough yet? Are prices high enough? Is inflation high enough? An old guy told me once to put a little pooh on your collar everyday and you could get used to anything. Well, what shall it be?
Regarding the letter "Mars project not a waste of money": What? That's bunk! Scientists don't have to send a space ship to Mars to come up with new technologies. We still have not tamed our own world. Let's work on ours before we start working theirs or others.
"New state residency policy in effect." This is a good deal for our students. But one item has been left out in my estimation, and that is the question "Are you a citizen of the United States of America?" I see nothing wrong with this question. Do you?
An American-imposed economic embargo on Iraq, prior to the initiation of war there, resulted in the death of an estimated 500,000 Iraqi children. To date, the Iraqi war has claimed another million innocent Iraqi victims and 4,000-plus American lives. The Afghanistan-Taliban war is more of the same. Now America is poised to repeat with an Iranian war initiated by another child-killing embargo, based upon lies, fueled by a "mad man's" perpetual war for perpetual peace doctrine and trillions in inflationary spending. Insanity reigns in America.
Euthanize wild horses? No! Want to punish someone? Make it the people who are totally insensitive to wild animals. This is outrageous. Stop it now. If our government allows this, then it's time for a new government.
To the Santa Clara Heights resident and all other dog owners who deliberately walk their animals to neighborhood lawns to defecate: How disgusting and abusive. A pooper-scooper and plastic bags do not rid the lawns completely of the mess and stench. Please use your own yard to mess and stink on. Because of inconsiderate, uncaring attitudes like that of the Santa Clara Heights resident, we now have a high wall around our property, and our beautiful green lawn is again clean for us, our children, grandchildren and friends to enjoy.
Ah, the sweet irony. Our "abstinence only" president's stimulus checks cashed at a Nevada house of ill repute with a bonus for cashing them there, too! That sure beats cashing them at the superstore whose only incentive is offering to cash them for free.
Flip-flop speeches have always been the norm for primary candidates. Obama has been doing more than his share. If it wasn't for the media, he and his family would still be attending Rev. Wright's anti-American Sunday rants. Now he tells us how patriotic he is and what exactly constitutes religion. Perhaps Obama should dictate what constitutes being a Muslim. Sorry pal, you have lost our votes. We need someone in the White House we can trust.
To the lady in Santa Clara Heights getting unwanted remarks for letting her dog "do its business" on someone else's lawn although she feels justified by cleaning it up: Consider walking your dog around your lawn until it does its business and then take it for a walk!
In the past week, two people wrote that the Chinese are drilling for oil 60 miles off the Florida coast. Please share with us your proof. Southern Utah Republicans apparently picked this up from a statement from our vice president. Just because Rush and Dickie Cheney said it does not make it true.
Both major party candidates for president are running on a platform of "change." Change sounds good but it never guarantees anything, especially change. As a rule, even if there is change, what we usually get is change for the worse. Under George W. Bush we've had 7 years of change. We've changed from a country where there was hope and opportunity with a strong middle class to one with little hope and the middle class is being crushed in favor of the elite. Any more "change" may destroy us completely.
To the person in Santa Clara Heights who walks your dog on a leash every day: It's my lawn! I do not have a dog because I do not want dog feces on my lawn, so why do you feel it is necessary for "your dog" to do "its duty" on my lawn? You may pick it up in a baggie, but there is still the remains of the "duty" on my lawn!
Our only movie theater raised the prices on their snack bar to outrageous prices. I think asking almost $5 for a kids snack tray is obscene. The theaters I've gone to in St. George do not charge this much. When I buy a ticket here, I'm going to tell them I won't buy snacks until they lower their prices.
Perhaps some youngsters have forgotten that it's the seniors that made it possible for you to enjoy what you have today. We have already paid into Social Security, from its concept, and deserve to enjoy the benefits. A majority of seniors have put our lives on the line for you, our children and grandchildren. Me, I do not play golf and know the 10 percent seniors discount comes as a courtesy establishments, not your pocketbook, and is granted through respect.
To all those people who don't like to listen to people speak Spanish in public, just stay home for a while. Utah's ethnic cleansing is in process, so you shouldn't have to listen to all that annoying chatter much longer. But my question is what are you going to complain about next? Maybe people bringing their brats to stores so they can cry? Or maybe "We must oust the Californians, they are taking over our beautiful state." I am sure you will find something.
If you are holding a garage or yard sale, please put up a readable sign that will not flop over and be obscured. Write the address large enough to be read without having to park and walk back to see it. Place subsequent signs and arrows of the same color to direct customers through the neighborhoods to your place of sale. Lastly, when your sale is over, take down the signs so the streets are not messy and people do not waste gas and time in subsequent weeks looking for a sale that no longer exists.
Let me get this straight. The splash pads cost $150,000 each, and our city is going to have nine of them. This area has a water shortage, but more splash pads is the best idea our city could come up with. Hardly "free" entertainment as quoted in the paper. Do these splash pads bring in visitors and tourists to spend money at our hotels and restaurants, like the golf courses do? Why not charge everyone who visits the splash pads or, better yet, give them cache cards and charge the users between $50 to $100 per year to pay for the upkeep?
I would like to respond to the writer of the July 5 vent regarding how disgusted he is about the senior citizens whining about the golf fees: I want to say that I agree with him on that issue, however, he is the one that is way off base on his idea that he is subsidizing "those folks" with Social Security, Medicare and other entitlements. He is paying each week out of his pay check in the hopes that he will have some sort of retirement. I hate to tell him that there probably won't be money there for a him when he retires. It is the senior citizens that should complain about subsidizing him and his family of 6.5 children when we have to pay the exorbitant taxes for sending his children to school.
To the cretin who's tired of his/her taxes supporting senior citizen whims: I'm just as sick of my taxes being spent to build parks and splash pads so the large number of kids and illegals have a free place to play.
This is in reply to the person who wrote to the Vent on July 5. For your information, you don't subsidize my Social Security and Medicare benefits. I worked for 42 years and pay into Social Security and Medicare. Since you are complaining about us senior citizens, I gather you have yet to work 40-plus years and have not paid all your dues as yet. As for the senior discounts, I am sure when you reach that age you will probably be the first asking for it.
If I lived in Santa Clara I would be questioning why a city employee is driving his city truck home to Hurricane. With the high costs of gas and all, I would think Santa Clara's city managers would try to cut costs somewhere. Oh yeah, the tax payers' pockets are deep!
I want to drive a car or truck with red and blue lights on top of it so I can drive 10 miles over the posted speed limit. The city has reduced the speed to 50 on a short stretch of road on Highway 9. When I am traveling through this zone I have been passed twice by these fancy vehicles (not in emergency situations) and the bright flashing sign "flashes" a big 60. And this has been in the early morning, so it can't be missed.
I was pleased to see the pending prison sentence of the former Hurricane city employee was changed to supervised probation instead. For the most part, putting nonviolent lawbreakers into prison is counterproductive in many ways, indicative of a medieval mentality, and probably un-Christian to boot.
How sad that a great high school principal has been moved out and a viable replacement candidate shut out by the Washington County School Board. Also, why is the school district exempt from laws against nepotism? My vent is against this bureaucratic kind of garbage. Let's get rid of the offenders and clean up the act.
I was at the store today and a young family in front of me had a cart load of groceries and was purchasing items with there WIC check. What I found odd is they could afford to by a 12 pack of beer but not the WIC items. Where do I sign my family up for state assistance so I can afford gas?
I agree with the poster who was shocked by the lack of coach participation when it came to getting kids college scholarships. That would mean they would have to take responsibility and step up for their athletes. After many years of dealing with this, my kids have scholarships because of the actions of my kids only. No coach ever made a call or even attempted to get schools actively involved. It was sad for my kids and made them realize some of our high school coaches are lazy.
In a letter July 10, the woman writer was ripping on Mr. Obama. She talked about American values and then included two outright lies about Mr. Obama. She cites America's values. Is lying an American value? Are dirty tricks part of the Republican value set? Is being ignorant of the truth an American value? She has lived under the worst president in recent history. John McCain recently said the Republicans have made a total mess of the economy. Is she proud of Bush et al?
