Hi all, been away for awhile.

Anyway, my husband (who is British) and I have been having an ongoing debate about whether or not the UK will soon convert to the euro.

I have been following the exchange rate of the GBP to the Euro for awhile now, and have recently read that the pound has dropped in value over 10% in the last year against the euro. It seems to me as the exchange rate moves closer and closer to one to one, the real possibility that the UK will have to convert becomes inevitable. My husband feels if this is put to a vote in the UK it will fail, however I wonder if the government would do it anyway. Or at least push a massive media agenda to promote it so that the average Brit would rather convert than have his/her yearly holiday to Spain become too expensive to take.

Any thoughts by the Brits or others (of course) out there. I am really interested in all of this, because IMO once the UK converts to the euro, it seems to me it is only a matter of time until the euro replaces the dollar as the primary world currency.

The Euro is clamoring to be the new dollar... in oil markets, in currency trading, even in US pop culture. Rappers wave fistfulls of euro's in their videos. Britain's markets are tied so closely to the US's that if their economists and power players have any sense, they'll run with the winners, and, through their common sense, will add to the economic downturn here.
The dollar is dead. Let's compose a durge to the tune of "material girl," and move on.
