Wasn't sure where to put this.

I am not the most techno-savvy, I admit. Could someone please explain to how you post a link here. And yes, you can pretend for this situation that I am a five year old. doh.gif

This is like it used to be at Thom's over two years ago.

Say you want to post a link to an essay like the following:

Neoliberalism: origins, theory, definition

There's a couple of ways you can do it. I generally copy and paste the title where I want it in the post and then:

What you do is put the cursor on one side of the title, left click, run the cursor over it so it blocks it;

then, leaving it blocked, move up to the little icons at the top and choose the green one with the little + sign; it's just to the right of the smiling emoticon with the arrow that's in the middle of the group on the left.

Click on that green icon and a window pops up that says: Please enter the full url. That's where you put the url to your link. There will already be an existing http:// in the box so make sure you don't end up with two.

Neoliberalism: origins, theory, definition

Hope that helps. smile.gif

some times it takes abitto figure out the details.
Don't be afraid to ask.
The only stupid questions, are the ones never asked.

You want to end up with a line of code tat looks something like this -

Project for the OLD American Century but without the * in the url.
Hope that help. Feel free to keep asking.

OH! The preview reads the way I want it to read, the post doesn't! How the bleep do you disable the BB code round here? blink.gif

Tell you what, if you hit 'reply' to this, or any post with a link, you'll see the code you need. wink.gif

I'll try to be clear.

1. Go to the site you want to link to.
2. Put the cursor up on the site address (the http://www.whatever.com) up at the top, and click it so the whole address is blue.
3. Right-click and click on "Copy."
4. Go to Old American Century and set up your "New Topic" or "Reply" the same way you would if you were just doing it without a link.
5. After you've said what you want to say, and you want to put in the link, click the fifth button from the right on the toolbar in the response screen (it's marked with a "plus" sign (+).
6. A box will appear in the upper-left corner of your screen, with a place to put a line of text. Set the cursor in that line, right-click, and click "Paste."
7. When the address you copied before is pasted into that box, click "OK."
8. The box will remain, this time asking for a title. Enter whatever you like, be it just "Link" or a more descriptive "Statistics on Hippopotamus Deaths from Choking on Tourists, 2001-2006." Click "OK" again. The box will disappear, and your link will appear in your response screen as a line of gibberish and code. That's OK.
9. Hit "Add Reply" and it should come up fine.

Hope that does it for you.

Welcome to the board, by the way.

you can also simply copy the address line in your web - browser, then paste it into the body of your post, and it will end up as a link. if you're unsure if it worked, preview your post. If it's underlined, it worked.

this works with copying links from other sources, too, in the body of text, accept you'll have to select "copy link" from the right-click menu, instead of "copy"
a quick note: if your posting a link from an email newsletter, or some other source that uses a program that automatically shortens the length of the address, it may go through a "link through" page first. In this case, it won't necesarily work, and you'll end up with a link to a blank page. In this case, you'll have to go to the page the source linked through, and copy from the address line.

Thanks all, I now realize what I was doing wrong. I was trying to post a link from the Quick Access box to the left.

Actually, you are correct ren, it is very similar to Thom's old site. I must admit I never did figure it out on the new site, that site is just not very user friendly.
