There was a shooting at my university today. I was actually in the building that it happened in about 20 minutes earlier, just cutting through to my next class. That is fucked up.

You have nothing to fear.

Yes, thank you dry.gif

What they are saying right now is that the gunman is dead and 18 people are injured.

Glad you are OK

Thank you sir. They are saying the only one dead at this point was the shooter. Hopefully that is the only death.

I second POAC's sentiment. You're a good guy, and we'd hate to lose you.

Seriously, man, if you start to get the feeling that maybe it's somehow unfair that those people were shot and you weren't, talk to somebody about it. Don't assume survivor guilt is bullshit. It's not, and it can really mess you up. Might even be a good idea to talk to a counselor or something anyway. This stuff can be really traumatic.

Thanks. I wasn't anywhere near the building when it happened, i didn't see anything or hear anything, no one i know was involved. I was probably half a mile away when it happened. I used to live in chicago and other bad neighborhoods in large cities, i'm used to hearing about stuff like this happening not far from where i am located.

I've taken a dozen or so psychology courses, so i know the symptoms of acute stress disorder and PTSD. Since i didn't personally experience anything traumatic, i should be ok. I will keep an eye out for any problems like that but i'm at a very low risk for anything long term.

Good man. Be well.

It looks like 5 people are dead, including the gunman. He wasn't even a student at the school. Just a random nut job i guess. Besides being shocked, especially since i had a class in that lecture hall last semester, i feel fine. Probably about as shook up as i would be if something like this happened somewhere in my neighborhood, maybe at one of the bars or supermarkets or banks down the street from my house. I don't feel scared or that my life is or was in danger. I'm shocked but not anxious and do not fear going to school on monday (if it is open then). As a psychology student, I just wonder how the people who witnessed this, who were 18 or 19 years old, how they will be in the long run. Many of these people already are under a lot pressure, many have homesickness, anxiety and depression. This will probably affect me for a few days, this could haunt them for decades.

Sure, we will probably know in the next day.
Jack
My sister says that one of my ex-girlfriend's friend (she is friends with my sister) was in that class. I'm a little skeptical that anyone would actually know her schedule down to that much detail but she says that no one has heard from her. Not exactly evidence of anything. My sister doesn't seemed freaked out at all, so i'm not too concerned. That would truly suck but otherwise, almost everyone i know at that university is accounted for. The only people i don't know about is a girl i was friends with last semester, although it was a class she would have no reason to take, and a few people i used to know in high school but again, probably not a class they would take. It was ocean geography and no one i know would be interested in that. Right now, there is just one person i am concerned about. I don't think i ever met her but still i don't want anyone i know to be severely impacted by this.

Glad you weren't there. It hit the radio here and I thought "I know someone in that neck of the woods..."

But we should all vote McCan't, to protect us from "evil terrorists who hate our freedumb"...

They're saying he was a former student of the school. That's really fucked up.

Poor bloody innocent kids. What a great start to life. wall.gif

A friend of mine in CA was freaked earlier this week when a student was shot at the junior high she almost sent her daughter to.
Scary, all these shootings!
Glad you're safe and well Jack! thumbup.gif

The death toll is now 7.
I feel for the families.
Jack
Sky it was 5 victims, not six. However, it has been confirmed to me that one of them was someone my sister knew in high school.

Here are the names.

# Daniel Parmenter, age 20, last of Westchester, Ill.
# Catalina Garcia, age 20, last of Cicero, Ill.
# Ryanne Mace, age 19, last of Carpentersville, Ill.
# Julianna Gehant (pronounced Ghee-hant), age 32, last of Mendota, Ill.
# Gayle Dubowski, age 20, last of Carol Stream, Ill

This morning the AP had reported that the number had risen to 7, including the shooter who is also a victim.

That report was wrong and was later cleared up. My school's web page said something about how some reports got mixed up. Anyway, the death toll is down to six, including the shooter.

Thank you.

From what i have been told, school is going to be canceled until 2/25. That seems very appropriate. They were first talking about starting classes up on monday, it would be too soon for many people. I'm not sure what i am going to do with an unexpected week off. I would gladly return on monday as a big "fuck you" to that dipshit but that isn't going to happen. I'll probably just spend a ton of time studying.

Gun dealer sold to both Va. Tech, NIU shooters

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The online gun dealer who sold a weapon to the Virginia Tech shooter said it was an unnerving coincidence that he also sold handgun accessories to the man who killed five students at Northern Illinois University.
Eric Thompson said his website, www.topglock.com, sold two empty 9 mm Glock magazines and a Glock holster to Steven Kazmierczak on Feb. 4, just 10 days before the 27-year-old opened fire in a classroom and killed five before committing suicide.

Another website run by Thompson's company, www.thegunstore.com, also sold a Walther .22-caliber handgun to Seung-Hui Cho, who killed 32 people in April on the Virginia Tech campus before killing himself.

"I'm still blown away by the coincidences," Thompson said Friday. "I'm shaking. I can't believe somebody would order from us again and do this."

His company, TGSCOM Inc., based in Green Bay, shipped the order Monday, and records of the sale provided to The Associated Press by Thompson show Kazmierczak received the order Tuesday.

Kazmierczak carried a shotgun and three handguns into the classroom Thursday. Thompson said he had no idea whether the shooter used the holster or magazines purchased on the website.

Each magazine can hold 33 bullets, Thompson said. He said his site did not sell Kazmierczak any bullets or guns.

Kazmierczak bought two of the weapons used in the shooting — the pump-action Remington shotgun and a Glock 9mm handgun — legally on Feb. 9 in Champaign, Ill., where he was a student, authorities said.

Thompson said he checked his sales records after the name of the shooter was made public Friday. The records show $105.62 in items were shipped to an apartment in Champaign and signed for by someone other than Kazmierczak.

Thompson said he contacted the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives within five minutes of realizing the latest connection Friday morning.

The Glock website is well-known among gun users on the Internet, so it is not surprising that someone looking for accessories for a Glock would find it, Thompson said. But being tied to both of the shootings is "unnerving," he said.

"I still feel just absolutely in shock," he said. "I feel like I was run over by a truck."

Thompson said he has no way of knowing whether Kazmierczak found out about his website from the publicity it got after the Virginia Tech shootings, but the thought crossed his mind. Web traffic increased after that shooting, along with phone calls and threats, he said.

It was not clear whether one site linked to the other.
