Interesting stuff, no? Here in Le Mars, we damn near lynched a judge until he agreed to rule a foreclosure law unconstitutional. That made national headlines and at the time, a future President (who was then a young reporter by the name of Ronald Reagan) came and interviewed one of the people involved on the front porch of a house that almost became the current POAC HQ. We opted for this house instead.
One of the things the Farmer's Holiday Association was known for was attending farm foreclosure auctions en masse armed with shotguns and pitchforks and only allowing bids of one cent. Once two bids were made, it was declared a legal auction and the person who was foreclosed upon would buy it back from the top bidder for two cents. Anyone objecting would get a pitchfork up their keester.
Another thing they would do to try to drive up the prices of their farm products was disrupt rail lines, form roadblocks and destroy goods that were being shipped via truck, and general mischief, thus increasing demand and prices.
Who says we don't know how to have fun in Le Mars?
I'm designing a t-shirt to sell here that says just what I said before: "Farmer's Holiday Association, Le Mars Iowa, NEVER FORGET" And then I'll put a crossed shotgun and pitch-fork for the image.
