It is a mild -10 degrees out. I went outside to see what it was like. I put on two tee-shirts, three sweaters, a hooded sweatshirt with a thermal lining, a wool trench coat, a ski mask, track pants under my jeans, and thick boots. I lasted about 10 minutes before every part of me was frozen. I'm not a little guy either. I'm pushing 200 pounds (i'm tall) and still it was more than i could handle.

Since i was in a ski mask, my breath bounced off and hit my face, so large parts of my beard were frozen to my to my face. I was picking ice out of my facial hair. So if it is -10 out, surprisingly, you should stay just stay inside and not go for walks. Who knew?

Jack.

I have been outside working, (chipping a monster pile of Christmas trees) when it was 10 below, wearing only a t shirt, and was still sweating.

There are a few key ingrediants.

1) no wind, not a whisper.
2) bright sunshine
3) being physical without moving around much

The problem, was the immediate chill down when I stopped working. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I live in a place that almost never sees really cold weather, and most people around here doubt my true story.

That is one major factor missing. It is -20 out here with the wind chill. It is never the temperature, it is always the wind.

Large parts of the country are swimming by now- Luckily I live far far away from those parts! biggrin.gif

Hah ! Actually, I just had a mental image of Jack and his frosty beard carrying a foresters axe, crunching through snowdrifts dressed as a lumberjack and singing as his breath frostily foams in front of his canuck hat in the crisp breeze... laugh.gif

Cue manly singing.............

I'm a lumberjack and I'm okay
I sleep all night and I work all day
He's a lumberjack and he's okay
He sleeps all night and he works all day

I cut down trees, I eat my lunch
I go to the lavat'ry
On Wednesdays I go shopping
And have buttered scones for tea
He cuts down trees...
He's a lumberjack...

I cut down trees, I skip and jump
I love to press wild flow'rs
I put on women's clothing
And hang around in bars
He cuts down trees...
He's a lumberjack...

I cut down trees, I wear high heels
Suspendies and a bra
I wish I'd been a girlie
Just like my dear papa
He cuts down trees...
He's a lumberjack...

There is one news station in the chicago area that calls it "real feel". They sound retarded; that's why everyone else says "wind chill".

-10 isn't so bad. When you get to -20, your nostril hairs freeze instantaneously and the air is so cold it makes you cough. This is why God invented polar fleece socks, and those handwarmers you can put in your gloves and boots. (in your back pockets too, if you worry about freezing your ass off - a trick I learned from my daughter who is 6'4" and weighs about 160 lbs.)

The highest temp for us today was 16F. Subzero tonight for sure. Tomorrow projected to be a repeat.

"Deleopmentally" you say? Are you maybe typing too fast? Too much caffeine in the system? It's ok. I'm not going to ask if you are developmentally challenged. That would be way too mean.
