I was watching a republican debate, and the moderator asked what could be done about oil prices and energy independence. You had you typical responses, and then that weird little Texas rep. says, in essence, that our problem would be solved if we stopped printing money, and ignored the problems of other countries. I about choked on my tuna sandwich.
I mean come on, thats on of the worst non sequiturs I've ever seen in politics.
First off, most of the money printed is to replace bills that go out of circulation, are lost, damaged, or used to light Haliburton execs cigars. Secondly, since our currency is now based on credit, printing more money does not affect its value the way it once did. It's true that overprinting can lend to inflation, but that is not the primary reason for gas prices being so high. The biggest reason for the jump in energy cost is demand as the world becomes more industrialized.
As for the whole ignore the middle east thing, ignoring their political problems, (aside from doing so being inhumane), it was one of the key factors that contributed to the current mess. Prior to the mid 70's, the U.S. policy was basically, we don't care who's in charge as long as they sell us oil at a reasonable price. This led to some nasty dictators and a general resentment towards the United States for not doing anything about it. Despite Ron Paul's assertion that if we leave them alone they will leave us alone, thats not how the world has worked since, well, ever, but even less so nowadays.
And lastly, while we do get a lot of oil from the middle east, a lot of it comes from Canada and South America, not exactly the raging firestorm of problems that is the middle east. And from a global perspective, U.S. gas prices are still relatively low.
