Full Version: economics subforum?

Ok, so here's my line of thinking...

there's a lot going on with the world and US economies right now, and, well, "money makes the world go 'round,"
so there's some pretty important issues to post, but they don't really fit in with the current political discussion forums - they could fit into any number of other forums, depending on the subject in question, yet because of the lack of an area to post them, I've hesitated to post many of the longer, more in depth things i've been reading, to keep from boring people.

In addition to this, some people think economics as a topic is boring as hell, while others could spend all day talking about it, and educate large numbers who never dealt with any of the issues in their schooling, leading to more being educated in a truely vital issue rumbling under the surface of most of our threads. Creating a subforum for it would keep the topic from cluttering other forums, and make it easier who don't care about it to skim past it.

If we do an economics forum, then why not a war forum, or a ecology and or global warming forum?
The list of possible forums really is long and would very quickly mess up the forums ease of use.

I would though like to see two new forums that would help cover this and many other topics.

Domestic Issues

International Issues

Politics in general is where all this other stuff has wound up, even though it's not really politics.

I'm with Seuss on this. I think an economics forum would be a boon. - There's so much to know and to understand about how our economies work and what the dirty backers are up to behind the scenes.
There's so much report about all the goings on in the economy, from workers being shafted, to the environment being decimated in the name of profit.
Basically, every decision we make, every choice we're offered, has a knock on effect elsewhere, and has economics at its root.
Not only that, but peak-oil, peak-coal, peak-natural gas, and peak all sorts of other limited resources and their sustainable alternatives need to be understood/recognised. The approaching world-wide depression, and a whole bunch of other stuff I don't yet understand, mean that the topic deserves a forum of its own.

I posted an article earlier today (about bankers and tomato pickers) and was actually looking for an economy sub-forum to put it in... I think I plumped for latest news in the end...

I think it would get little to no traffic and economic issues could easily fit into one of the other subforums.

Why?

what's wrong with subforums?
sky of mind
how about just 2 subforums.

Politics and Not Politics

Here's what I think...

Obviously we don't have too many subforums, since all of them but one has been used in the past 24 hours. "Arts and culture" hasn't been touched for 2 months. So I'm thinkin' that one should go. Something to consider: for those who post a lot or have to monitor a lot of posts, it's better to have more forums than less, so topics we want to watch don't get buried. It's easier to keep track of 2-3 threads in several forums rather than 30 threads in two forums.

Does anyone here ever post anything in a thread and then afterward wish it was lumped in with a larger more active forum?

Edit to add:

I'm deleting "arts and culture". We've averaged 1 new post a month for the last year witha total of 15 replies.

Well, i don't think there is a major problem with threads getting lost. The only one where they do is in Latest News but then again that one is going to move quickly, just by the nature of that forum. However, if you really feel we need to spread things then looking at we talk the most about could probably be its own forum, which i am guessing is Iraq and maybe Bush's totalitarian tendencies.

Mostly I completely ignore the subforums and just read through the "view new posts" search results.

You want me to make Rousseau and Karen post in a separate forum from the rest of us? That's not very nice!

We sometimes have to give up some freedoms to protect our freedoms.

I actually like the idea of an econmics forum. More here than meets the eye. Investing, living, regional economic trends, even gloal ones. I like it and would think it adds some "meat" into an otherwize collection of "I hate fucking everything and the Gubbermint sucks".

If we add one, can I post about how the entire field of economics is built on faulty assumptions and hasty generalizations, and is generally conducted with very poor empirical evidence? Or will I get one of these:

sounds exactly like one of the original lines in my thinking on this:

Looks like we're getting an economic subforum. I'll wait until tonight for all votes, opinions to be cast.

Indeed, there was a strange, sudden jump for the yes votes and there may be more votes than active members.
