Wow, yeah. Just think how courageous you have to be to make fun of the President. Makes all those Marines look like weenies, doesn't he?
I don't think many people have the courage to sharply criticize the president and the media when standing next to the president and surrounded by the media. Usually a performer wants to be liked by his audience. This wasn't the usual lampooning you see going on at this event. This occasion was exceptionally poignant and Colbert said things that we were all yearning to hear and say to Bush's face.
So yeah, if you want to compare the actions of a marine in combat with a performer doing a media event, you can do that, but you'd look pretty petty doing it.
The whole point of what made this moment special was the
dissent involved and the pointedness
of that dissent. Bringing up the example of marines following the orders of Bush doesn't really fit into this discussion of Cobert's balls. If Colbert was getting praise for keeping down an insurgency in an unjustified occupation for the corporate gain of the pals and business partners of the commander-in-chief and his handlers while simultaneously making the threat of Islamic extremism worse, then yeah, marines would be a fair comparison.
Sometimes I think you have a really negative prejudice against anyone non-military.
