Oh God, Randi says that the death toll will be up to 2,000 by the time the next election comes, I think that that is to conservative, I think it could be as high as 10,000.

You know what Doc, I've almost broken faith with this LOST generation of young people. If the figures are to be believed, they didn't turn out in the numbers anticipated in the ONE ELECTION which clearly was in their self-interest to vote.

But if they couldn't unglue themselves from their video games or find time to read a book, the impending DRAFT is sure to concentrate even these apathetic minds. That's one of the lessons of Vietnam, isn't it? These kids are next in the Bush regime's urgent search for bodies to throw into the breach. As he said, "you can run but you can't hide."

Maybe once these kids get in the Pentagon's cross hairs they'll wake up and take to the streets, in a repeat of the 1960s. Maybe Bush will be impeached, because this country simply cannot tolerate 10,000 casualties anymore.

I sure hope so. But I'm a realist too.

I am not really good at math, but does it seem like since they hit 1000, the rest seem to be happening at a faster rate?
And i'm pretty sure MOST of these have some after bushs "mission accomplished" speech. I don't get that.
It is very sad, and i still can't see what any of these people had to die for (and i don't even want to think of what the number of dead iraqi civilians might be.

Unfortunately we don't have an official count of the dead Iraqi, yes there are probably over 30 to 40 thousand, but we just don't know, and the U.S. soliders count hits closer to home, but you are right there is a tragic cost of human life in this illegal war.

U.S. Troops Deaths in Iraq Top 1,500

29 minutes ago Middle East - AP

By TODD PITMAN, Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The number of U.S. troops killed in Iraq (news - web sites) has topped 1,500, an Associated Press count showed Thursday after the military announced the deaths of three Americans, while car bombs targeting Iraqi security forces killed at least four people in separate attacks.

Two suicide car bombs exploded outside the Interior Ministry in eastern Baghdad Thursday, killing at least two policemen and wounding five others, police Maj. Jabar Hassan said. Officials at nearby al-Kindi hospital said 15 people were injured in the blasts, part of the relentless wave of violence since the Jan. 30 elections.

Another car bomb targeting a police convoy exploded in Baqouba, 35 miles northeast of the capital, killing one Iraqi policeman and a civilian, the U.S. military said. Six police and 10 other civilians were also wounded.

Amid the violence, interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi extended the state of emergency, first announced nearly four months ago, for another 30 days until the end of March. The order remains in effect throughout the country, except in northern Kurdish-run areas.

The emergency decree includes a nighttime curfew and gives the government extra powers to make arrests without warrants and launch police and military operations when it deems necessary.

The latest reported American deaths brought the toll to 1,502 since the United States launched the war in Iraq in March 2003, according to the AP count.

The military said two U.S. troops died Wednesday in Baghdad of injuries suffered when a roadside bomb struck their vehicle. Another soldier was killed the same day in Babil province, part of an area known as the "Triangle of Death" because of the frequency of insurgent attacks on U.S. and Iraqi forces.

At least 1,140 Americans have died as a result of hostile action, according to the Defense Department. The figures include four military civilians.

Since May 1, 2003, when President Bush (news - web sites) declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 1,364 U.S. military members have died, according to the AP count. That includes at least 1,030 deaths resulting from hostile action, the military said.

The tally is based on Pentagon (news - web sites) records and AP reporting from Iraq.

The U.S. exit strategy is dependent on handing over responsibility for security to Iraq's fledgling army and police forces. Forming Iraq's first democratically elected coalition government is turning out to be a laborious process.

The car bombers in Baghdad were trailing a police convoy that was trying to enter the Interior Ministry, Hassan said. Iraqi security forces opened fire on the vehicles and disabled them before they could arrive at a main checkpoint, said Col. Adnan Abdul-Rahman, an Interior Ministry spokesman.

Iraqi forces also killed one Iraqi man during clashes with gunmen in the northern city of Mosul, army Capt. Sabah Yassin said. Two soldiers were injured.

Also in the north, insurgents blew up a gas pipeline that links Kirkuk to Dibis, about 20 miles away, said Col. Nozad Mohammad, a state oil security official in Kirkuk. Mohammad said the blast would cut gas production, but he could not say by how much.

Talks aimed at forging a new coalition government faltered Wednesday over Kurdish demands for more land and concerns that the dominant Shiite alliance seeks to establish an Islamic state, delaying the planned first meeting of parliament.

Shiite and Kurdish leaders, Iraq's new political powers, failed to reach agreement after two days of negotiations in the northern city of Irbil, with the clergy-backed candidate for prime minister, Ibrahim al-Jaafari, leaving with only half the deal he needed.

The Shiite-led United Iraqi Alliance, which has 140 seats in the 275-member National Assembly, hopes to win backing from the 75 seats held by Kurdish political parties so it can muster the required two-thirds majority to insure control of top posts in the new government.

Al-Jaafari indicated after the talks that the alliance was ready to accept a Kurdish demand that one of its leaders, Jalal Talabani, become president. However, he would not commit to other demands, including the expansion of Kurdish autonomous areas south to the oil-rich city of Kirkuk.

Kurdish leaders have demanded constitutional guarantees for their northern regions, including self-rule and reversal of the "Arabization" of Kirkuk and other northern areas. Saddam relocated Iraqi Arabs to the region in a bid to secure the oil fields there.

Politicians had hoped to convene the new parliament by Sunday. But Ali Faisal, of the Shiite Political Council, said the date was now postponed and that a new date had not been set.

"The blocs failed to reach an understanding over the formation of the government," said Faisal, whose council is part of the United Iraqi Alliance.

The Kurds, he added, were "the basis of the problem" in the negotiations.

"The Kurds are wary about al-Jaafari's nomination to head the government. They are concerned that a strict Islamic government might be formed," Faisal said. "Negotiations and dialogue are ongoing."

In another twist, alliance deputy and former Pentagon favorite Ahmad Chalabi was to meet Thursday with Allawi, whose party won 40 seats in the assembly. It was unclear why the meeting between the two rivals was taking place.

Both are secular Shiites opposed to making Iraq an Islamic state. Concerns over a possible theocracy are especially pertinent because the main task of the new assembly will be to write a constitution.

Elsewhere, Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s lead lawyer said Tuesday's shooting deaths of a judge and his lawyer son, both appointed to the Iraqi Special Tribunal to try the former Iraqi leader and his top henchmen, show the country remains too dangerous for such trials. The shootings marked the first time any legal staff working for the court have been killed.

"I can't imagine how the court would begin," Ziad al-Khasawneh told the AP in Tokyo. "The streets are burning, the judges are killed. ... The advocates and the judge, they need a quiet area to read, to study, to discuss. It is impossible to make these things this year, or after this year."

Baghdad Car Bombs Kill at Least Five Policemen

1 hour, 34 minutes ago

By Elizabeth Piper

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Two car bombs exploded near Iraq (news - web sites)'s Interior Ministry on Thursday, killing at least five policemen in what al Qaeda's local wing said was a twin suicide attack to try to assassinate the minister.

The group, led by Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, vowed to pursue Interior Minister Falah al-Naqib -- part of its relentless campaign of violence to bring down the U.S.-backed interim government and stall efforts to form a new cabinet.

"This blessed Thursday morning, two lions from the martyrs brigade set out and launched a heroic attack on the collaborationist Interior Ministry, targeting the interior minister," the Al Qaeda Organization in Iraq said on an Islamist Web site.

"But he escaped. However, if one arrow missed, there is an endless supply in the quiver ... Thank God, for there were many Crusaders with their vehicles, guards and policemen and the two operations hit them and killed and wounded dozens."

A police source said the car bombs exploded just outside the heavily guarded ministry in central Baghdad. At least five police were killed and several others wounded.

Across Iraq, suicide bombers and clashes between insurgents and the U.S. military added 10 to a death toll that climbs steadily every day, and in the north gunmen sabotaged power supplies -- underscoring the problems the new ministers face.

POLITICAL HORSE TRADING

Iraqi politicians are engaged in protracted horse-trading to fill top posts in the government, creating a new political landscape that has raised concern over sectarian tensions.

A Shi'ite alliance won a slim parliamentary majority in the Jan. 30 polls, gaining power after decades of Sunni Arab domination under Saddam Hussein (news - web sites). The alliance has chosen Ibrahim al-Jaafari as its candidate for prime minister. But interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi is bidding to keep his job.

The Kurds, who came second in the elections, are in a powerful negotiating position and are seen as kingmakers.

Iraqi officials said on Thursday talks would continue for several days.

But whatever its makeup, the new government will face the daunting task of tightening security against further attacks by mainly Sunni Arab insurgents angered over losing the privileges they enjoyed under Saddam.

Many Sunni Arabs boycotted the polls or were too afraid to vote, and the 20 percent Sunni Arab minority has little representation in Iraq's new parliament.

In fresh violence to hit Iraq's north, two Iraqis working for a construction equipment company that supplies American contractors were killed by insurgents in Kirkuk, police said.

Nearby in Tikrit, one Iraqi soldier was killed and six wounded by gunmen, and in Baquba a suicide bomber blew himself up near the local army headquarters, killing one civilian and wounding 14 people.

In Qaim, 310 miles west of Baghdad near the Syrian border, three people were killed, including a woman and child, in clashes between U.S. troops and insurgents, doctors said.

In Baghdad police discovered the bodies of three men who had been blindfolded and shot in the back of the head, a scene that is becoming increasingly common in Iraq.

Guerrillas also targeted energy infrastructure, blowing up a gas pipeline feeding Iraq's main power station on Thursday. The blast near Kirkuk forced two out of four turbines at the Baiji power station to shut, engineer Khaled al-Lami said.

Daily violence and killings across Iraq have fanned fears the country might not be able to close the chapter on the decades of oppression under Saddam.

Gunmen in Baghdad on Tuesday killed a judge working for the Iraqi special tribunal set up to try the leader and his top lieutenants.

Judge Barawiz Mahmoud and his son, a lawyer, were killed as they left their home in north Baghdad in the first assassination of a tribunal member.

The judge's killing came a day after the tribunal referred its first charges against defendants, saying it had enough evidence to put five former Baath party officials on trial, including Saddam's half brother Barzan Ibrahim al-Hassan al- Tikriti and former Deputy Prime Minister Taha Yasin Ramadan. Tam,

It's so unfair!
How this can make me cry,
and those who make these decisions?

War was supposed to be the alternative of last resort.
THIS is the LIE we have been fed!

How can any human being be so cold?
tamara
sky,

i think it is because we LET them avoid looking at the truth-

we've become the party they want us to be... we are the anti-soldier party-

we don't force them to be honest with themselves, much less the american people...

we must get back to compassion for ALL - soldiers and civilians alike- they are all pawns...

only THEN can we make those yellow-bellied murderous traitors face the music.

it makes me sick too.

Powerful. It got deadly quiet when the music stopped at the 40 newborns who will never meet their fathers.

That first pic is one I've been using since I first saw it....I don't remember where I saw it...probably ap photos...it is the epitome of this war to me...his face, the tears and as I recall at the time there were coffins draped in flags photos and I believe he had just lost a buddy.

The last picture...in total silence is extremely poignant.....as were so many of those pictures. The reality of war.

Thanks for posting it.

Didn't see a music credit....interesting choice. It WILL be all right...IF we bring them home asap. Otherwise, more tortured souls will come home if they live through this nightmare.

Anybody have any stats handy on the number of troops who died in Vietnam within the same basic time frame...onset to present...as have already been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan? I remember reading some stats a while ago but have lost the link.

Also, it took the Gold Star Mothers ten years to mobilize for Vietnam. NOW, we've already got women like Sue Niederer making LOUD noises. I sure do admire her.

You said it -t-, we have a president who was a coward and deserted the AIR F*CKING NATIONAL GUARD during the Vietnam war, and HE is sending our kids to die, it disgusts me, -t- it really does.

btw... the music is by 'the killers...' a new group my daughter introduced me to before they got big in the states- i really like them alot-

i too would like to see a comparison b/t stats in vietnam and now...

Bring Them Home
Gadzooks!
The two guys from the 44th...That's my stepson's Bn. I had just read an email from him saying he felt like the pressure was off his guys a little, two new army batallions had been assigned to the 1st MEF. I slid on over to icasualties.org and saw this shit and thought "Jesus, Ehren, head down ass down, come home in one fuckin' piece, PLEASE, God...no heroics, kid." And I had been hoping for an email from him, four soldiers had been killed in Ramadi a coupla days earlier and they hadn't been IDed yet. He's my stepson, and God knows I love him like he's my own, but he's a dumb ass sometimes. Thinks DU is good shit, would eat it for breakfast with milk and sugar if they told him to. He knows my history, and my position on war generally, this one specifically. It...has..strained our relationship...he enlisted to win his father's approval. It didn't work, his dad still calls him a "little faggot". He also says morale is l-o-w and a half, guys who are not prone to philosophy are asking why the hell they are there, and saying we are notnotnot gonna win this. The grunts can always smell it first. I know.

I have no trouble seeing it. The music stops at the frame where it says 40 U.S. Children were born who will never see their fathers...or vice versa I forget...and then there were several photos of dads with their babies. No music for the rest of the flash.
But it's beautifully done and incredibly poignant....the silence was even touching.
It's a keeper. biggrin.gif

It definitely loads faster. Can you put the music on a loop to a fade at the end? It's still beautiful and you should pat yourself on the back for a job well done.

That's a terrible worry for you Gadzooks! Kids sometimes do act like dumb asses...we know cuz we've all been there. They feel immune and immortal. I'm assuming that you are able to communicate back to him that he should follow your advice. How much longer does he have to stay over there?

One of my son's friends is currently in NY and expects to be sent over fairly soon. His dad kicked him out of the house the day he turned 18....I wish I'd had a chance to talk to him first....I said he could live with us but he joined the fucking army. He's just a baby. He didn't have the grades for college and lacks self esteem. Just like your nephew, he's trying to prove something to his rotten dad. His mother left him when he was 4, she used to beat him. Broke a chair over his head. He hates her. He now hates his dad too. Told him I'll send him equipment if he needs it...just email me or call...I wish we could protect them all. I'm shocked at the number of parents who figure their "job" is done at age 18. I've had a few "refugees" here at different times and we usually have one or two in their cars sleeping in front of the house. I'll vouch for them if the cops hassle them. It's a good street to park on for "overnight camping" and off the beaten track. These boys hold down jobs....just have ZERO parental support.

OF COURSE, the grunts always know first. Are they getting any unfiltered news apart from family emails and phone calls. I read someplace that they get a lot off Yahoo.....which has even started to post stories against the BFEE.

Hey Gadzooks!....do you have any information on stats for early Vietnam or can you point me to a site? Thanks.
