I thought that he said that, as god's mouthpiece on earth, GOD made him do it. I wonder why the vatican hasn't gotten into a pissing contest with him yet... He keeps claiming the god personally tells him to go out and commit genocide. Now, doesn't the Pope have that angle cornered? Aren't the pissed off because THEY"RE the ones who are supposed to torture people out of their religious beliefs and wage wars of morality in the middle east? In the beginning, Bush called this a crusade... I really think the vatican should start riding his ass on this kind of rhetoric - It's their job to start crusades and be the voice of God.
