Just thought I would sign up and let you know there are others who see the US as an extremely important nation and take a keeninterest in both its fortunes and misfortunes.
As for me I live in rural Australia - for better or worse our futures are inextricalby linked economically, politically, militarily and culturally. I became aware of PNAC some time ago and became very concerned at the utterances of guys like Michael Ledeen who was a recent guest in Australia Eliot Cohen and the Kagan posse.
I have read the blue print for American militarsitic expansion written by PNAC in 2002 and feel more than a little uncomfortable. So I was interested to see your site.
Rgds Sneekee - I might from time to time deliver an Australian perspective to things

An Australian perspective would be interesting.
What do you think about Howard having to negotiate between Iran
and the U.S. regarding the nuclear standoff?

I've got relatives in Australia and NZ too.

Which one of us is REALLY down under?

I don't think you can really understand what is happening here until you see how people are being bombarded with propaganda. If you can cable into Fox News somehow it will be a real eye opener. There's also a nationwide radio outfit called Clear Channel that directs propaganda 24/7 to non-college educated young white male population. They are as loose with the facts as any broadcast program you'll ever see or hear. The BBC has done some good expose on these two.

I was overseas for many years and couldn't understand why the country seemed to have gone mad. I didn't really understand the situation until I came back and saw the effects of the propaganda. I spent some time in the south and in Texas and met huge numbers of people who could not distinguish between the propaganda and genuine news. The felt that if they heard it on the radio or television, it was news. They only thing on their radios and televison was RNC propaganda - and they accepted every single word of it as gospel fact.

The opposition party is in denial over this. I spoke to some Kerry people in Septeber and they felt that this huge media operation was unimportant. They told me that people saw through it and it just made the opposition look bad. I guess they had never spoken to an average person in a red state.

Excellent observations.
I was in Ireland for the 2004 Democratic National Convention.
I had to rely on my laptop for information.
They get bad news that we don't get but not the devout CSPAN type coverage that we get too. They also do a bit of censoring on Iraq. It's "the Americans" who are referred to....not any other members of our ENORMOUS coalition.~

OTOH their news is the truth with the exception of the bad things done TO the Irish BY the British. That's all slanted. Yes, even in Ireland.

What struck me most was that I could say freely out loud what I thought. Here I can't say "I hate Bush" without looking over my shoulder. The Irish just come right out and say publicly "that Fucker Bush is going to get the whole bloody world blown to bits....somebody needs to put an end to him" and they can get away with it. No FBI on their ass.
Also, I was over in the August RIGHT before 9/11 and if you take a plane FROM Ireland TO England, frightening "official" looking men in dark suits scrutinize every passenger. I of course joked around with them. (I'm an idiot) And they said, "nothing to worry yourself about madam!" I guess I didn't look IRA enough. Although I fit the profile. Dark hair blue eyes....I look Irish because I am.

Oh, if you want to know a really embarrassing story ask me about my fanny pack. Heh heh.

To the question regarding how Howard will handle the Iran/US situation - with some trouble I suspect; it would seem Iran actually does has WMD capabilty so there is no need fabricate evidence. Logic would indicate Howard has no reason not to go along with any poosible pre-emptive strike on Iran-sadly. Our contribution I suspect would be far more tokensistic this time.

Howard is cagey - he will wait as long as he can until he has to make a public decision. The lesser lights in his party seem less hawkish now than in the past but a few more scary stories about terror will put the lead back in their pencils.

To Crack Monkey - my understanding will belimited however the net is a wonderful tool - I regularly scan things like Net daily news Worldnet daily, Anne Coulters Web site and the Weekly Standard - so I do get a feel for the depthof Propaganda thats out there.
The Weekly Standard, like Fox is in the media stable of former countryman Murdoch - I find the pedigree of its key edotorial staff interesting indeed - and it explains a lot.
The newspaper/journal market over here is fairly thin so we are spared too much of the constant stream of neo con cheer leading - but America does have its champions over here; there is one guy called Andrew Bolt who is a huge Bush and all things American, when it comes to war and right wing agendas - he is worth a read just ggogle Herald Sun Vic - you should strike there web page; they archive most of his crap.

Stay away from ANYTHING M'ann Coulter has to say. You'll get cooties.
She's pond scum or the scum inside the scum or worse. She just gets my knickers in a twist and my blood pressure goes up at the sight of her revolting face.

She's toe jam personified.
