Paying The Costs Of The Iraq Occupation - And Stopping It

Here's an idea for an "incentive-based" solution to paying the costs - human and financial - of the ongoing occupation of Iraq. If the COSTS of the occupation were actually being paid by the public-at-large - instead of borrowing the money and making our kids pay it off - it would end tomorrow.

1) A huge-ass whopping tax on everyone to pay the costs of the occupation. This comes to about $8500 for each family of four so far, not counting upcoming costs like replacement of equipment, medical care for the wounded, the cost of eventually bringing them home, etc.

2) Any family that actually sends someone to fight in the war does not have to pay the tax.

This is an opportunity for Bush supporters to - for the first time - do more than put "support the troops" stickers on their SUVs.

I like point one, but point two..! Not liking that at all! It translates too easily as 'Send us your sons and daughters to face possible death or maiming OR pay us $8500'.
Bet Bushco'd go for it though, if they were pushed.

Well, I guess Id just have to drug my kids and have em all signed up and ready before they woke up. So, if I send 3 kids, do I get a $17,000 credit on my taxes?

Kind of a reverse of the Civil War draft. If you were drafted, you could pay $300 and get out of it.

Vietnam Draft.
Go to college, get a deferment.

Do military personal serving in a war zone pay income tax on their earned income?
Somehow that just doesn't seem kosher. Pay for the right to risk yer life.
Bungie Jumping might be safer, and quicker!

Soldiers pay income tax on their "pay", which includes extra for hazardous duty and for combat.

Their "allowances" are tax-free. Those pay for food and shelter in cases when soldiers procure that for themselves. I would guess that most of that money goes to Halliburton.
