i hate to admit it (as a southerner) but the stereotype is rooted in a good bit of reality.
no stereotype is 'valid' in that its a generalization about someone without knowing them- and of course there are southerners like myself who do not fit the stereotype... but 9 time out of 10 a poor white southerner is a racist. those who are wealthier are also racist, but generally have the good taste (and business sense) to keep their views to themselves. poor folk have nothing to lose by expressing openly their views on color. does this make them any worse than the lexus drivers who hold the same views but call themselves "conservatives"?
anywhere i've traveled in the world, ignorance abounds. unfortunately, in the south there are people who are actually PROUD of their ignorance, wear it as a badge of god-knows-what...
(sigh)
i'd love to say that the stereotype is total hookum. but its true, dammit, its true....
so many southerners claim their interest in the confederate flag is merely about 'heritage.' the bumpersticker i see pretty often is 'heritage, not hate.' but the circumstances around this particular photo, the WHY of it, points out that it is certainly about hate. most certainly.

total bullshit.
