Even tho' it's been downplayed, denied and all but forgotten I still think that control of oil in the mideast is a big part of the neocon dream and the invasion of Iraq. While our invasion and occupation have been morally disgusting, it seems there is logically (there y'go Greenguy) some truth to the belief that a number of scenarios might play out in the region that might endanger our access to cheap oil and/or the current system of US dollars being the currency used market it. This might indeed play hell with our economic and political climate. What should/will we do about the oil? What will the result be?

Think this will happen?

The United States should not object to the Iraqi government voiding all contracts entered into for the exploration, development, and marketing of oil during the American occupation. These contracts clearly should be renegotiated or thrown open to competitive international bids. The Iraqi government and public believe that because Iraqi oil has been sold at a discount to American companies, and because long-term

“production-sharing agreements” are highly favorable to the concessionaires, an unfair advantage has been taken. Indeed, the form of concession set up at the urging of the CPA’s consultants has been estimated to deprive Iraq of as much as $194 billion in revenues. To most Iraqis, and indeed to many foreigners, the move to turn over Iraq’s oil reserves to American and British companies surely confirms that the real purpose of the invasion was to secure, for American use and profit, Iraq’s lightweight and inexpensively produced oil.

Yes, the oil is important, and I saw no mention of the possibility (or probability) that when the US finally leaves, Iraq will void all oil contracts and re-nationalize the resource and all related industries. That is what permanent bases are about.

I think like a mom on these issues > stealing is bad, bad, bad wry2.gif

I imagine Bush will negotiate an agreement that Uncle Sam will give cash aid to the Iraq Gov't, and one of the terms will be continuation of the oil contracts.

Which is the equivalent of shoveling taxpayer dollars to the oil companies.

I think the term "negotiate" is a bit of a stretch, but certainly something like that.

Karen Kwiatkowski's whistleblowing on the Office of Special Plans has brought out a lot of that reasoning for the 14 bases... I hope she is one of the first to be called as a witness for the investigations!

The Iraq over sight investigations should be extremely interesting to watch.
Hell, TJ might wanna make a forum just for investigations. They could be potentially huge, and might even change the world.

An interesting sidebar to Iraq's oil and what becomes of it...when Saddam Hussein was Boss, Iraqi oil was a nationalized industry, but he dealt with the West, including the US. When we withdraw, and we will, and Iraq nationalizes it's oil/oil-related industries again, there is the very real chance that Iraq oil money will finance Al-Qaeda, something it had never done in the past. As a result of our meddling. Thank you, mr. bush.

They may also decide to not sell to the US or the West.
Several other countries want the oil, and are much more "supportive", such as China.

I think we'll be feeling the effects of this Legacy through the rest of this century, which just about it's entirety.

I don't think that mankind is going to make it through this century sky. At least, not most of us.

I certainly intend to.

I read somewhere that if there ever is a global nuclear war, the only survivors would be cockroaches and Keith Richards. So he'll prolly make it, too.

Frankly, I don't expect to make it to the end of the century. (I don't wanna be 145 years old)
I do though expect to do everything I can to give my kid a shot at it, and his kids, etc.

BTW. Human beings have been expecting end of times ever since we could talk with more than grunts and finger pointing.
If it ever happens, it'll happen. In the mean time anyone who anticipates and lives their life expecting such to happen any time soon is nothing less than a paranoid fool.

"Grunts and finger pointing", wasn't that Jimmy Swaggart, or Karl Rove ? I get so confused sometimes.... blink.gif
