(from an interview between Rumsfeld and reporter Bob Woodward)
Woodward: Mr. Rumsfeld, —
Rumsfeld: Do I see a difference between saying “yes” we won't do this but “no” we'll do that with regard to staying the course with no benchmarks for the Iraqis and saying “no” to not altering our strategy and not being flexible in response to not having a specific timeline? Yes, of course not! Is there any reason for the Iraqis to take over saying “no” to the yes men in the militias simply because it's hard to say “yes” to the “no” votes in this new Democracy, who have, Lord knows, no reason whatsoever to say “yes” unless we stand up and say “no” to them, my goodness, yes, absolutely not! I've always never said that.
But Wait! THere's more......
I can’t look at the mothers and fathers and husbands and wives of those who wear our uniform who may be in Iraq, and say, it’s noble, but not think I can -- we can win the -- the only way we can win is if we leave before the job is -- I mean, the only way we can lose is if we leave before the job is done. That’s the only way.
