Right now I am a political science major and hoping that i could get into law school in about two years. I was thinking that if that didn't work out, get a PhD in Political science and be a professor. Let’s face it, a bachelors degree in political science won't get you any where. Then i got to thinking, first off studying politics that in-depth is kind of boring(try studying the political trends of japan in the 1970's and tell me that it isn't boring), yeah current events is very interesting but i'm not sure how much i care beyond that. Then i had this idea, change my major to psychology(your major doesn't matter too much for law school) and if i can't get into law school, get a PhD in psychology and make $250,000 a year. Psychology is all about logic and problem solving, which is basically what the LSAT is all about. I have done well in psychology classes in the past, so i think i could do quite well in it.

Good plan right?

Maybe do both? Double majors?

That doesn't sound too appetizing. No point in getting both if i didn't go beyond a 4 year degree.

Dont major in psychology and law. Ive know 2 people who did that and dropped out of law school. And psychology wont help you much on the lsat either. While it does use some logic and deductive reasoning, the poli sci background will help you better. What poli sci classes have you had so far?

Go for law school, just study hard for the lsat, if that doesnt work, continue on in poli sci. Just put your emphasis in something you DO like.

I've heard that it works very well. Psychology is a good fall back but political science is not. I have to figure out how to switch though.

But if you get into law school, you will need the poli sci background. Those who have other abstract backgrounds,ie history, psychology, etc..., never seem to do that good. My girlfriend tells me this from her first hand experience. While the psychology might help you GET in, it doesnt help you in there.

Well I'm not sure how much political science would help either. I think that English or Logic are the best ones to go for but neither one of those interest me. The way i figure it, political science isn't going to help me get into law school any more than psychology. If i don't get in, then a psychology degree is far more useful than a political science degree and if i want to go to grad school, political science is still pretty useless but psychology is a top rate profession. Hell my dad has a degree in political science but he sells insurance, that tells you where that degree will land you(he does very well for himself though). It just seems all around a better choice to go for psychology.

Sure, but like i said youll just be screwed when you get in. The lsat is much more than "logic". It takes knowledge on legal matters as well. Figure out what you want and apply yourself to THAT 100%. Stop worrying about whether or not you CAN do it, just DO it. If you doubt yourself, youll fail everytime.

From what i understand, the LSAT has nothing about law on it. Sounds weird but they don't care how much you know about law before you get in, since they will teach you that stuff. The LSAT is about determining how well you would do once you get in.

I'm not being negitive about my ability to get in, i'm sure if i tried hard enough i could get in but i want to hedge my bets on this one.

The funny thing is, in my gf's current class, the people with the highest lsat scores are not doing that well. heh. The lsat is meaningless past admissions. her friend got 10 pts higher on the lsat and faild the first semester. My fiance had a BAD lsat and is in the top 10% of her class. I would work on what would help you in law school, not what would help you get in. I only say thing because i have seen all of it through my girlfriend and the others from her undergrad and others here at su. Either way, i do wish you the best of luck! (and if you go to su law, we can kick it!)

Two questions:

1. What are you studying?
2. How old are you. A fiance already in college? I wouldn't be cought dead doing that.

Oh 26, nevermind. Thought you were in your late teens or early 20's.

It just reminded me of a guy that i used to work with who was 19 or 20 and engaged. I really didn't understand his reasoning behind that.

Well, we met 6 years ago, she was in highschool and i was only 20. You can be 20 and engaged, although we waited untill just a few years ago to get engaged. But love is a journey, some people just reach the destination quicker than others. But shes really great and i wasnt about to let her leave without me!

Don't live too fast. You are where most people are in the mid-30's. You could be dead of old age in 10 years.

Heh, i always have been more into the "older" forms of entertainment. I dunno, i just never really liked the whole "party" scene and the consumption of large amounts of alcohol. My fun nights (at 17) were a nice dinner and the symphony or opera. Or sometime in Chicago i would go one one of those dinner cruises on the yatchs at navy pier. Man, those were the times....

Actually I am with you to a certain extent on "older forms of entertainment". I'm not into classical music or anything like that but I, like you, have never been into partying, getting wasted with a bunch of strangers, and screaming like an idiot. I do like drinking but i would much rather do it in a calm setting, like talking with friends or hanging out with my brother. I have been to a few parties in my day and have had some fun but i wouldn't want to do it more than a few times a year. I would much rather go out with friends and play pool or see a movie or just hang out than go to college parties. I think I'm probably about 2 years ahead of most people my age. From what i can tell, most people start getting tired of the parties some point after they turn 21. For me, it was about 19. Just not my idea of fun.

But hey, like i have always believed, be yourself and do what you want to do.

You know you would have been the kind of person who i would thrown things at in high school. Nothing personal, i just had a problem with people who were too different from myself back then. Don't worry, i have out grown such things.

However, i must admit in the past 6 months or so i have taken a liking to art and jazz, two things which i used to hate, the latter being something that i have become interested in since moving into the down town area. Listening to jazz with the south loop lake shore sky line in front of me just seems right. I am so glad my apartment is facing east rather than west. If i had a view of the river and the post office, i might be a totally different person.

Chicago has some great galleries and the best jazz on earth. The view to the east is always breathtaking (depending on where you are located). Is your building high?

I'm on the 12th floor, i think the building gets up to 17 stories.

Here is a pic of where it is. Its the roundish cement building

Hey, i know right where thats at. Just a few blocks from union station, right? Your building looks like a smaller version of the mushroom building in the theater district, next to the chicago theatre! My friend who was going to kent lived a few blocks north of you.

Yeah, about 4 or 5. It is two blocks directly south of the Chicago Stock Exchange.
