'Dog the Bounty Hunter' arrested
Sep. 14, 2006 at 4:00PM
Duane "Dog" Chapman, star of the A&E reality series "Dog The Bounty Hunter," was arrested Thursday in the United States for a 2003 capture in Mexico.
U.S. marshals raided Chapman's home in Hawaii, MSNBC reported. He could be extradited to Mexico, where bounty hunting is a violation of the law.
Chapman was detained briefly in Mexico after he captured Max Factor heir Andrew Luster in Puerto Vallarta. Luster, who was wanted in the United States for rape is now serving a 124-year sentence. Chapman, his son and another colleague posted bail and returned to the United States.
A spokeswoman for the U.S. Marshals Office told TMZ.com that an arrest warrant was signed Wednesday by a federal magistrate in Hawaii.

Yeah, it is total bullshit. The guy is a die hard bush fan but still, let him go.
Gadzooks!
The whole Luster thing happened pretty much in my neighborhood. Chapman was arrested for interfering with corruption. Luster had paid off all the right people to ensure he would never be returned to the US and prosecuted. It is still expected that Luster will walk free after less than ten years' confinement. Rich people are not supposed to go to prison. That is the system Chapman is being slapped for bucking.

I don't like the guy at all. He gives the private security and bountyhunting professions a bad rep as thuggish and ignorant. That being said, injustice is injustice, no matter who it's perpetrated on; He didn't deserve this.
It's kind of like the deal going on with the two border patrol agents...

Valid point. In light of which, I amend my statement to "he earned it, but the law forbidding it is unjust."
Maybe now he has a look at the other side of his business. Maybe he'll have a little more compassion for some of his bountys that tread in the gray areas of what is just.

He broke the law...IN MEXICO!!!! That doesn't count! If international law counted then Bush would be at the Hague awaiting trial!!! Dog caught a rapist the gov't wasn't looking for and who bought his freedom through the corrupt Mexican courts and government. (I know , your'e shocked!!!!! corruption...? in Mexico...? )

How about we make a trade, 1 million illegal Mexicans for Dog? i mean, they'll all be back in a month or so anyways......
Gadzooks!
He bought his freedom through a corrupt American judicial system as well as Mexican. Granting him bail without freezing his assets was meant to give him a good head start. He was a clear flight risk.

That's not international law, it;s Mexican law.

Don't you know that when you travel to other seas that its up to you to know the laws where you are going?
And that if you break the law in a foreign country, because of agreements between countries that there isn't much the US can do to protect you?

Sorry, but a Mexican comes into THIS country and breaks the law, we would expect him to go to US jail. An agreement may be possible to release the Mexican to the Mexican prison system, but that's about it.

Simply put, rich or old from any, or in any country. If you break that countries laws, then you get what you get!
Safest bet is not be aware and NOT break any local laws. Dog took his risks.
Gadzooks!
Doesn't matter. He is going to be prosecuted for forcing the government of the US to incarcerate a multi-millionaire serial rapist, and prosecution in US courts wouldn't fly. It is expedient to use the Mexican court system to punish him. And to warn others not to fuck with the wealthy.

On the other hand, if he hadn't broken Mexican law, at least that have to find another reason to get him.
He broke the law, he made his own problem. Or at least he gave them opportunity, and that ain't very smart.

Somebody kick the fuckin' jukebox, that record keeps playin' over and over...Mr. Chapman has done us all a great service. He has notified wealthy criminals that they have one less place to hide.

I agree. That's not an issue. But application of the law should not be suspended because we agree with what any particular law breaker is doing!

Apply the law to me and you, and Dawg and President Bush, all equally!
If we don't apply the law on Dawg, why should we apply the law to Bush?

Think for a second.
Breaking the law to apply the law, doesn't this just sound wacky?
No matter how justified the end was, this does not justify the means!
happymisanthropy
Does this remind anyone of Elian Gonzales? Not the characters, but the situation.

We need to nail this to Bush. Even if international law does require Dog's extradition, when has Bush ever cared about international law?

No, this needs to suck as much for Bush as the Elian affair sucked for Janet Reno.

Oh, and hi everyone.
Gadzooks!
MLK once said that if a law is a bad law, it is our moral duty to disobey it. I still believe that. And the law in question has been enforced only rarely in the past. I am well acquainted with the Luster case. He is a serial rapist, and paid the Ventura County prosecutor and the presiding judge a great deal of money for the head start and lack of interest he got. He's doing 124 years, with time off for good behavior. I think he'll spread some more $$$$$$$ around and walk early. Unless some con shanks him. Prison. It's not just for poor folks anymore. And let me tell you about the Mexican police, both locals and Federales, snatching American tourists and holding them for ransom on (sometimes trumped up) drug charges, bleeding their families back home dry. Chapman has never been a likely hero of mine, but in doing what he did he has earned my gratitude. Sometimes it just takes what it takes. You go, Dog!
