WASHINGTON - First lady Laura Bush chose high fashion for the Black Tie and Boots Ball, sporting a raspberry silk taffeta Carolina Herrera ensemble with a Western touch - a full skirt and fitted bodice resembling a button-down shirt.

But for many of President Bush's Texas supporters, the ball was more about the boots - and less about the couture.

The Texas State Society's gala Wednesday was arguably the most unconventional bash of inaugural week - at least in fashion terms. It's the only party in town where the 10,000 guests are not just encouraged but expected to pair down-home duds like Stetson hats and Tony Lamas kicks with tuxedos and evening gowns.

The Redneckization of Murkuh is moving toward completion. Now all that's left is writing laws mandating a 12-gauge in every home, banning every drink besides Pabst Blue Ribbon, replacing every comedic record with tapes of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, and turning every radio station to country.

Hold the phone here kids!

There is nothing that states western wear can't be highly stylish!

Put a pair of Wranglers over Boots with a huge western belt and buckle, plus a white dress shirt with pearl snaps, a nice tie and snappy well fitted western style sport jacket. And top it all off with a killer black Stetson. I think you will find few ladies that don't consider that real style!

Anyone who insists style is dictated from New York, well, it's their loss now isn't it?
