Zalmay Khalilzad, currently George W. Bush's special envoy and US ambassador to Afghanistan, will be transferred as ambassador to Iraq pending Senate confirmation. Just as Hamid Karzi was, a former consultant for Unocal. Khalilzad is also a founding member of the Project for a New American Century 4-11

The vast majority of Taliban commanders retreated to Pakistan or adopted a low-profile private life in Afghan villages pending Mullah Omar finalizing a new guerrilla strategy similar to that adopted by the Iraqi resistance. The results of this are expected to manifest themselves within a few months. 4-11

Watched a great documentary last night. Life after War. Can't find it available online anywhere, but if you can find it, get it. It's about an NPR reporter who quit to work on rebuilding a village in Afghanistan. One of the telling points was Hamid Karzai's brother explaining how the U.S. has brought the antithesis of democracy due to the opium trade/warlordism having filled the vacuum left by the Taliban. 4-4
